Notes: Abstract A small patch of cells in the epithelium of the anterior surface of the collar of the serpulidPomatoceros caeruleus contains membrane-bound vacuoles filled with crystalline material. The crystals have rhomboidal or rectangular profiles and have been shown by electron diffraction analysis to be composed of hydroxyapatite and calcium magnesium phosphate. The apices of the cells are bordered by microvilli. Some cells also have apical cilia. The cells contain Golgi complexes in the apical cytoplasm. Large numbers of mitochondria are distributed thoughout the cytoplasm. The possible function of these mineral-containing cells as sites for storage of calcium and/or phosphorus is discussed.

Notes: Synopsis Embryos in specific stage of the estuarine teleost, Fundulus heteroclitus, were exposed to mercuric chloride (MC) and methylmercuric chloride (MMC) under several distinct treatment conditions. Four-eight cell stage eggs (0-day old) were exposed for 4 days (continuous), 2 days and one day to each mercury compound. One-day old (mid-blastula), 2-day old (mid-neurula) and 5-day old (beating heart) embryos were exposed 4 days to MC and MMC. Mortality for the four days immediately following the initiation of exposure was the embryonic response measured. Under most exposure conditions to the 4–8 cell eggs, progressive and significant reductions in survival were observed at all concentrations above 40 and 30 μgHg++l−1 as MC and MMC, respectively. Reducing the duration of exposure to 1 day most significantly increased the survival potential of the 4–8 cell eggs. For all exposure treatments to the 4–8 cell eggs, significant differences in survival, between eggs exposed to MC and MMC, were determined at 40, 60 and 80 μgHg++l−1, indicating the presence of compound-dependent response differences. In all cases demonstrating response differences between MC and MMC exposed embryos, survival was significantly lower following exposure to MMC. Survival of embryos was progressively increased when the initiation of continuous exposure (4 days) was delayed 1, 2 and 5 days after fertilization. As a result, compound-dependent response differences were progressively shifted to higher He++ concentrations. For both MC and MMC, survival of 1-day old embryos exposed for 4 days was greater than that of 0-day old eggs exposed for 1 day. Of the embryonic stages examined, it appears that the earlier cleavage stages are the most sensitive to mercury intoxication.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Non-polar organic micropollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls and some pesticides, which are adsorbed to sediments have a low bioavailability to freshwater and marine animals. Bioaccumulation factors from sediments (concentration in animal/concentration in sediment) of the organic pollutants investigated range from less than 0.1 to about 20, several orders of magnitude lower than bioaccumulation factors from the water for the same compounds. Bioavailability of sediment-adsorbed organic micropollutants is directly related to the solubility of the compound and sediment grain size, and inversely related to sediment organic carbon concentration and animal size. Organic micropollutants adsorbed to sediments are only slightly bioavailable, but sediments in contaminated areas often contain high concentrations of adsorbed pollutants; therefore they represent an important source of contamination of freshwater and marine animals.

Notes: Summary Pomatoceros caeruleus possesses a pair of simple acinar calcium-secreting glands lying in the ventral peristomium. Each gland has a single large secretory acinus containing columnar secretory cells with basal nuclei. Golgi complexes and flattened cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum are abundant in the midregion and secretory vacuoles fill the apical cytoplasm. Elongate microvilli extend from the apices of the cells into the gland lumen. An organelle-free zone, the intracellular channel, extends from near the base almost to the apex of the cells. It is bordered on one side by the lateral cell membranes and is separated from the organelle compartment by elongate profiles of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The secretory products of the calcium-secreting glands have the form of cubic or rhombohedral granules with average dimensions of 150–200 mμ on a side. The granules are composed of a fibrous organic matrix in which needle-like calcite crystals are deposited. The possible mode of synthesis of the calcified secretory granules is discussed.
