Notes: Abstract Glyceraldehyde-3-P dehydrogenase (GAPDH) in heterocysts and vegetative cells of 3 N2-fixing cyanobacteria was found to utilize both NAD+ and NADP+. The enzyme activity was enhanced by thiols (glutathione, reduced lipoic acid and dithiothreitol). GAPDH of the 3 cyanobacterial species was not activated by thioredoxin. Heterocysts have now been shown to possess all the enzymes of glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle to convert glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (GAP) to oxoglutarate and glutamate. The GAPDH reaction is a major source for the generation of NADH, which is oxidized by a thylakoid-bound NADH:plastoquinone oxidoreductase in heterocysts.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract A description is given of an equipment for measuring the total normal emittance and the angular dependence of the emittance of solids in the temperature range from 1000 K to 3000 K. The emittance is determined by comparing the radiation emitted from the surface of the sample to the radiation emitted from a blackbody. The samples are small disks and are heated in vacuum by an electron gun. The temperature measurement is by a photoelectric special pyrometer in a hole drilled radially in the sample. The measured data are digitally recorded and evaluated by means of a computer program. So it is possible to make systematic measurements in a short time. The error is in the region of 3%. — Experimental results for graphite, molybdenum, tantalum and tungsten are presented.

Notes: Abstract A model system is described where Azospirillum and germinated wheat seeds were grown in association for a week and then assayed for nitrogen fixation (C2H2-reduction) and denitrification (N2O-formation) activities. The association performed C2H2-reduction and N2O-formation under microaerobic conditions. Both activities were measurable after already 3–5 h of incubation with substantial rates and were strictly dependent on the presence of both plants and bacteria. During the week of the growth of the association, the bacteria had lived exclusively from the carbon compounds supplied by the roots of the plants. C2H2-reduction activity by the association was more or less the same with all the Azospirillum brasilense strains, but lower with A. lipoferum and with the A. amazonense strains tested. Two nitrogenase negative mutants of Azospirillum brasilense showed virtually no activity in the association. C2H2-reduction activity was strongly dependent on the growth temperature of the association. Denitrification (N2O-formation) was high also at higher temperatures and at pH-values in the medium around 7.8 but not at neutrality and was strictly dependent on nitrate. The Azospirillum strain used strongly determined the rate of the N2O-formation in the association. It is suggested that Azospirillum may be beneficial to crops particularly under tropical conditions.

Notes: Abstract The thermophysical properties of solid aluminium, magnesium and titanium alloys are extracted from literature and new measurements performed within a European concerted action (CONST 507D). In Marseille, heat capacity values for binary and ternary aluminium alloys as well as for industrial aluminium and titanium alloys are assessed between 20° and 600°C from DSC and heat content measurements using a drop method; enthalpies accompanying the precipitation and dissolution of metastable and stable phases are determined. All values are stored into the databank THERSYST together with detailed description of the materials and of the experimental conditions. Special modules enable the data selection, representation and manipulation according to the user's criteria.
