Notes: Abstract: In this paper we present experimental results concerning the compaction of a granular assembly of spheres under periodic shear deformation. The dynamics of the system is slow and continuous when the amplitude of the shear is constant, but exhibits rapid evolution of the volume fraction when a sudden change in shear amplitude is imposed. This rapid response is shown to be uncorrelated with the slow compaction process.

Notes: Abstract —The western Alpine regions have been instrumented since the beginning of the century, and the number of seismological stations largely increased since 1980. This dense network has allowed an important improvement in the hypocentral determination, even for low magnitude events. This condition was a good opportunity to perform a synthesis of 32 years of instrumental seismicity in the Western Alps and southeast of France (1962–1993) and to attempt an improvement of the older event location with the assistance of the more recent locations.¶The revised catalogue of seismicity is built using station corrections and regional crustal models. After the elimination of non-natural events, the catalogue is composed of 6697 events. Another improvement corresponds to the revision of magnitudes. We performed several tests to evaluate the reliability of our results location of quarry events and rock bursts, epicentral correlation with geological features, coherence in depth with interpreted seismic profile (ECORS line), Moho isobaths. A first use of this catalogue is presented for the Haute-Ubaye region in the southwestern Alps.

Notes: Abstract Two earthquakes occurred in the Ligurian Sea in December 1989 and April 1990. Both were widely felt along the French and Italian Rivieras, thus reminding us of the seismic risk in this region. The significant increase in the number of seismic stations in the area facilitated the study of these two shocks and their related aftershocks. Using different techniques (absolute and relative hypocentral locations, doublet analysis and waveform modeling), we computed accurate hypocentral locations and estimated the location-error range for earthquakes in this area. We also computed the focal mechanisms for both mainshocks, and we present here a synthesis that integrates previous data. The reactivation in compression of the Ligurian Sea sphenochasm is confirmed, which would eventually result in the closing of an aborted oceanic domain. As the seismic activity is clearly restricted to the northern margin, we suggest it locally results from the lateral expulsion of the south-western Alps along the Apulian indenter.

Notes: Summary The presence of connective tissue elements in gliomas necessitates in every case a thorough analysis of the character and derivation of such elements to allow the formulation of an appropriate diagnosis. Four cases are presented in this paper. In cases 1 and 2 (anaplastic astrocytomas in two children, 9 and 4 years old, respectively) all the neoplastic elements were astrocytes and their ability to produce or indirectly promote the production of reticulin and collagen fibers accounted for the presence of such elements in close association with the tumor cells. The term “gliofibroma” has been coined for such tumors, but “desmoplastic astrocytoma”, (low grade or anaplastic) or in highly malignant cases “desmoplastic glioblastoma”, as the case may be, also seem to be appropriate terms for such neoplasms. In contrast, cases 3 and 4 represented composite tumors in adults (66 and 58 years old, respectively) and the neoplasms of these patients consisted of glioblastoma and sarcoma, the latter component demonstrably being of vascular origin. This is the type of tumor usually referred to as gliosarcoma or “Feigin tumor”. Although some apparent similarities between the two groups may exist at times, the histogenesis of the latter group's sarcomatous or sarcoma-like portions is different from that of the first group and, therefore, warrants separate diagnostic terms and placement in brain tumor classification.

Notes: Abstract Objective To evaluate the efficiency of intratracheal colistin in preventing nosocomial bronchopneumonia (BPN) in the critically ill. Design Study evaluating the clinical incidence of nosocomial BPN in 2 groups of critically ill patients who receive or did not receive intratracheal colistin. BPN was assessed clinically in survivors and histologically in nonsurvivors. Setting A 14-bed surgical intensive care unit. Patients 598 consecutive critically ill patients were studied during a prospective non-randomized study over a 40-month period. Interventions 251 patients — 31 non-survivors and 220 survivors — did not receive intratracheal colistin and 347 — 42 non-survivors and 305 survivors — received intratracheal colistin for a 2-week period (16000000 units per 24h). Measurements and results The incidence of nosocomial BPN was evaluated clinically in survivors, using repeated protected minibronchoalveolar lavages, and histologically in non-survivors via an immediate postmortem pneumonectomy (histologic and semi-quantitative bacteriologic analysis of one lung). The clinical incidence of nosocomial BPN was of 37% in coli (−) survivors and of 27% in coli (+) survivors (p〈0.01). This result was histologically confirmed in non-survivors, where the incidence of histologic BPN was of 61% in coli (−) patients and of 36% in coli (+) patients (p〈0.001). Emergence of BPN due to colistin-resistant micro-organisms was not observed. Because colistin was successful in preventing Gram-negative BPN and did not change the absolute number of Gram-positive BPN, the proportion of BPN caused bystaphylococcus species was higher in group coli (+) patients (33% vs 16%). Mortality was not significantly influenced by the administration of colistin. Conclusion This study suggests that the administration of intratracheal colistin during a 2-week period significantly reduces the incidence of Gram-negative BPN without creating an increasing number of BPN due to colistin-resistant micro-organism.

Notes: Summary  An experimental study on rats showing the arterial lesions caused by the beams of gamma irradiation used in stereotactic radiosurgery is presented. The common carotid artery of the rat was irradiated with a single narrow-beam of gamma radiation with a maximum dose of 30 and 60 Gy. The results were evaluated at 4, 12 and 24 weeks after irradiation. Several focal changes in the arterial walls were observed in all periods of study with a predominance of hyperplastic (proliferative) alterations at doses of 30 Gy, and hyaline degeneration at doses of 60 Gy. Total occlusion was not observed in any case. In conclusion, vascular hyperplasia is more prominent with the lower doses evaluated.
