Notes: Summary Glomerular filtration rate (GFR;51Cr-EDTA clearance), serum creatinine concentration and urinary excretion of prostaglandins were measured in 8 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) before and after 2 weeks of treatment with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). ASA 65 mg/kg or up to 4 g/daily was given as a sustained release preparation. The serum salicylate concentration ranged from 0.3 to 1.6 mmol/l. Serum creatinine after 1 and 2 weeks and GFR after 2 weeks of ASA treatment showed no significant changes. There was a clearcut decrease in urinary excretion of prostaglandins PGE2 and PGF2α, by 44% and 50%, respectively. It is concluded that therapeutic doses of ASA do not cause deterioration of GFR in patients with SLE and normal or moderately reduced renal function.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of the present investigation was to study the distribution of interproximal periodontal intrabony defects as related to age, sex and localization, and to examine the relationship between some possible etiological factors and the occurrence of intrabony defects.A total of 209 adult patients presenting for dental treatment at the Royal Dental College in Arhus participated in this study. The patients were subjected to a questionnaire and were examined clinically and radiographically. All osseous defects in the radiographs were recorded but only those with a depth and width of at least 2 mm were considered periodontal intrabony defects. Only 18 % of the participants had one or more periodontal intrabony defects but the prevalence was higher in older than in younger age groups. While periodontal intrabony defects occurred with the same frequency on the various tooth types, more defects were found on distal than on mesial surfaces. The presence of periodontal intrabony defects correlated with loss of attachment, increased tooth mobility, a wide interproximal space and open mesio-distal contact relationships between the teeth.

Notes: Background : As percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is often used for many months or years, the longevity of the feeding tubes plays an important role in the global outcome and costs of PEG.Aim : A retrospective study to evaluate the longevity of silicone and polyurethane PEG catheters. Methods : The records of 297 patients who were fed via PEG for over 90 days were evaluated. The material of the PEG catheter, duration of follow-up, local complications, need to remove PEG because of tube deterioration or local complications and time from PEG placement to PEG removal were recorded and compared. Results : Two hundred and twenty-eight patients had polyurethane and 69 had silicone PEG catheters. The follow-up ranged from 116 to 3207 days for the polyurethane group and from 98 to 1861 days for the silicone group. No differences were observed in either local complications or PEG removal because of local complications. Tube deterioration causing PEG removal occurred in 36 of the 228 polyurethane PEG catheters and in 25 of the 69 silicone PEG catheters (P = 0.0005). Tube deterioration occurred significantly earlier in the 25 silicone catheters than in the 36 polyurethane catheters. The mean time from PEG placement to PEG removal was 287 days (95% confidence interval, 239–335) for silicone tubes and 573.9 days (95% confidence interval, 425–723) for polyurethane tubes (P = 0.0024).Conclusion : Polyurethane PEG catheters seem to be more resistant to deterioration than silicone PEG catheters, and at present they should be preferred for long-term enteral feeding via PEG.

Notes: The purpose of this investigation was, to compare the histological features of Kielbone and autogenous jaw bone following transplantation into periodontal interradicular lesions in monkeys. Bifurcation defects were produced on mandibular molars and premolars. Kielbone was transplanted into 40 bifurcations while another 30 bifurcations received fresh autogenous cancellous jaw bone. The animals were sacrificed according to a schedule yielding observation periods up to 16 weeks. Before sacrifice the animals were perfused with a mixture of india ink and serum (3:1) by cannulization of the carotid arteries. The specimens were decalcified in a formic acid/sodium citrate solution. Cleared specimens 100μ of thickness were prepared from one half of each specimen. The other half of the specimen was cut into serial sections 8μ thick and stained with hematoxylin and eosin or Mallory's connective tissue stain. During healing of the treated defects Kielbone grafts and grafts of fresh autogenous bone from the jaws displayed similar histological features. In the bifurcation defects, Kielbone as well as autogenous bone grafts occured as isolated bone particles surrounded by a cementum-like substance. It is suggested that Kielbone may constitute a suitable substitute for autogenous bone grafts in the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects. However, it should be emphasized that neither autogenous jaw bone nor Kielbone did favour bone regeneration in the bifurcation defects.

Notes: Thirty-six two-wall periodontal intrabony defects were produced adjacent to incisors and canines in 12 monkeys. Following a reverse bevel incision mucoperiostal flaps were raised on the buccal and lingual aspect of the defects. After removal of all soft tissue, fresh iliac bone marrow grafts were transplanted into eighteen of the defects. The remaining eighteen defects on contralateral teeth, were treated in the same way except that cancellous bone grafts from an edentulous area of the maxillary jaw were placed against the root surface prior to the transplantation of iliac bone marrow. After transplantation the tissue flaps were repositioned and sutured. The animals were treated and sacrificed to yield observation periods from 3 to 24 weeks. After decalcification and embedding in paraffin, serial sections were cut at 8 microns and stained with hematoxylin and eosin.Ankylosis and active resorption of the root surface was found in the majority of the defects grafted with fresh iliac bone marrow. In defects treated with the composite grafts ankylosis and root resorption occured with considerably less frequency. These results suggest that ankylosis and root resorption can be minimized if iliac bone marrow grafts are effectively separated from the root surface.
