Notizen: Two mesh refinement indicators based on the gradients of effective stress (GSIG) and effective plastic strain (GEPS), respectively, are proposed for adaptive finite element analysis of the large deformation, quasi-static or dynamic response of shell structures. The mesh refinement indicators are based on equi-distributing the variation of stresses or plastic strains over the elements of the mesh. A program module is developed and implemented in the non-linear explicit finite element code LS-DYNA. This module provides element-wise refinement evaluations so that selective mesh refinements are carried out in regions of the mesh where the values of local indicators exceed a user-specified tolerance. The FE model of a conventional deep drawing process is used as a numerical model, including both material and geometrical non-linearities, in order to demonstrate the versatility of the two refinement indicators. Four different refinement indicators, based on angle change, thickness change, GSIG and GEPS, are applied in this investigation. The numerical results are compared with experimental results regarding the thickness distribution versus cup height, cup height variation versus circumference angle, effective plastic strain in the deformed sheet and punch force. It is shown that the proposed indicators can identify finite elements which have high gradients of effective stress or effective plastic strain so that the mesh is refined in the regions undergoing the most severe deformations and the numerical results are improved.

Notizen: We have developed a tool for simulating the press cycle and the sintering cycle of cemented carbides. A constitutive model for compaction and tensile fracture has been implemented in the explicit FE programme LS-DYNA2D, and it has been tuned to experiments of hydrostatic compression, uniaxial strain and conventional triaxial compression. The programme simulates the complete compaction cycle in a robust manner. Friction against the tooling is properly taken into account. We have further developed a constitutive model for the stress-free solid-state sintering to also account for a mechanical stress field. The sintering model is based on physical concepts, diffusion parameters, free surface energy, dimensions of carbide grains, etc. of the constituents, and was tuned to successfully simulate the unloaded and loaded sintering of simple specimens. The models of compaction and sintering have a common set of state variables, such that after the compaction cycle, and at raising the temperature the sintering starts out with proper account of the residual stress field. Finally, the potential of the model is demonstrated by simulating the production cycle of a simple WC-Co tool piece until sintering to 75% of full density. The final geometrical shape of the specimen is compared to experimental data. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: An algorithm for evaluation of friction in general contact-impact interfaces is described. The algorithm is based on an explicit finite-element method. Coulomb's friction law is assumed. The defence node algorithm is used such that the sticking condition can be imposed with the Lagrange multiplier method even in explicit dynamic analysis. The algorithm is supposed to be applicable in general situations, including large deformations of the contact-impact bodies and large relative sliding between the contact-impact boundaries. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the algorithm.

Notizen: A new global search method for general contact systems is developed and implemented in the DYNA3D program, along with a recent contact interface algorithm. The concept of ‘position codes’ for efficient global contact searching is presented. With the position code algorithm, the problem of sorting and searching in three dimensions is transformed to a process of sorting and searching within a one-dimensional array. The cost of contact searching is of the order of N log2 N, where N is the number of nodes in the system. The proposed algorithms are uncomplicated and the implementation into any finite element code is straightforward. Numerical experiments are presented in order to examine the behaviour of the algorithms in different aspects.
