Low Molecular Weight Degradation Products of Lignin, 1. The Degradation of Beech Lignin with Thioacetic AcidThe reaction of ground beech wood with thioacetic acid and boron trifluoride, followed by alkaline hydrolysis and reduction with Raney-nickel degrades 91% of the lignin to monomeric to tetrameric products under mild conditions. From the monomeric fraction (50% of the lignin) 1-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)propane (1) (24% of the lignin), 1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)propane (2) (7%), pyrocatechol (3), (3%), 3-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxy-phenyl)propan-1-ol (4) (2%), and 3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)propan-1-ol (5) (1,4%) are obtained as the main products.
Notes:
