Notes: Abstract  Three silica gel sample systems, modified with 3-amino-propyltriethoxysilane (APTS), were prepared by sequentially sampling the reaction mixture at various time intervals, and the diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectra of these samples were measured in the regions 2700–3500 and 1300–2000 cm-1. The IR bands observed at 1597 and 1629–1633 cm-1 were assigned to the deformation modes of NH2 and NH+ 3 groups, respectively. The intensities of these two bands are dependent on both the APTS concentration used in the preparation and the reaction time. The results are summarized as fol-lows. For the sample systems in which smaller APTS concentration were used, most of the NH2 groups of the aminopropyl segments are converted into the NH+ 3 groups on the surface, showing that the SiO-…H+NH2-type structure is predominantly stabilized on the surface of the silica gel. As the APTS concentration in the reaction mixture increases, the population of NH2 groups in the silane layer coated onto the surface increases. Interpretation of the CH stretch region further suggests that cyclic structures may be formed on the surface as a consequence of the formation of NH+ 3 groups.

Notes: Abstract Barium ethyl(alkyl)phosphates, as new simple surfactants ((C2H5O)(RO)-PO 2 − )2Ba2+ with various chain length ofR, were synthesized. The infrared spectra in the CH stretching region were measured for these surfactants in the solid state and in aqueous solution, and assignments were made. In particular, the ordering and environment of octyl chains in the different phases of the barium ethyl(octyl)phosphate-water system were studied by the Fourier-transform-infrared and Raman spectra. The CH stretching bands in the infrared spectra reflected the ordering and environment of octyl chains in each phase. The Raman band connected to the PO 2 − symmetric stretching mode was sensitively shifted. This was caused by the change of aggregation structures with different Ba2+...PO 2 − interaction. The infrared band arising from the PO 2 − antisymmetric stretching mode was insensitive to the phase structures. The C−C stretching region in the infrared spectra was used to discuss the ordering of each phase.

Notes: Abstract  The polymerization behavior of perfluorooctyltrimethoxysilane (PFOS) in ethanol, which is acid-catalyzed by 0.25 M HCl, has been examined using time-resolved near-IR and 2D near-IR correlation spectra. In the time-resolved near-IR spectra, the bands at 5164 and 4825 cm−1 have been assigned to the combination bands of water and ethanol OH groups, respectively. It has been found that the absorbance variation of the two near-IR bands occurs in a two-step process. The absorbance of the 5164 cm−1 band rapidly decreases in the initial step but increases exponentially in the second step, while that of the 4825 cm−1 band rapidly increases both in the initial step and, exponentially, in the second step. These results indicate that the time-dependent absorbance variation of the two near-IR bands reflects the polymerization process of PFOS, in which consumption and release of water molecules and release of methanol in the two-step process occur as a consequence of the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of methoxy groups and the formation of silanols (SiOH) to form a siloxane bond. It has also been found that this polymerization process is distinctly reflected in the 2D near-IR correlation spectra.

Notes: Abstract The polymerization behavior of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, a process initiated by water molecules, has been examined using time-resolved near-IR and 2D near-IR correlation spectra. By deconvolution of the time-resolved near-IR spectra, the existence of the component bands at 5189, 5265 and 5300 cm−1, whose intensities decrease markedly as the reaction proceeds, has been confirmed in the 5000–5400 cm−1 region. The band at 5189 cm−1 has been assigned to water molecules, while those at 5265 and 5300 cm−1 have been assigned to the strongly and weakly associated silanol groups, respectively. The kinetics of the hydrolysis of the ethoxy groups and of the formation of a siloxane bond have been analyzed using the time-dependent integral intensities of these three bands and the mechanisms of the reactions have been discussed. Evidence for this polymerization process is also clearly evident in the 2D near-IR correlation spectra.

Notes: Abstract An embedded single-filament shear-strength test was employed to explore the effect of the reinforced interface on the fracture of single filaments in glass fibre-epoxy resin composites. The interfacial effect was evaluated not only by critical fibre length but also by the fracture process of an embedded single filament observed by applying tensile load to the composites. The mean fragment length, measured at different tensile stresses, decreased with an increase in stress and finally reached a value correlated with critical fragment length. Interfacial reinforcement by silane treatment affects the fracture process rather than the critical fibre length. The behaviour was examined in several factors, such as filament diameter, the tension of filament on the moulding of composites, and the scatter of the composites in mechanical properties. A useful method was proposed to exclude such scatter: specimens treated on a half-length of embedded filament were subjected to this test. The present method leads us to confirm that the reinforced interface has no effect on the critical fibre length, while it does promote the progress of the fracture.
