    Notes: Using weighted discretization with the modified equivalent partial differential equation approach, several accurate finite difference methods are developed to solve the two-dimensional advection-diffusion equation following the success of its application to the one-dimensional case. These new methods are compared with the conventional finite difference methods in terms of stability and accuracy. The new methods are more accurate and often more stable than the conventional schemes.

    Notes: A new fourth-order locally one-dimensional (LOD) finite difference scheme based upon the Noye-Hayman method for one-dimensional diffusion is used to solve a two-dimensional time-dependent diffusion equation with an integral condition replacing one boundary condition. Numerical testing shows this gives better results than a locally one-dimensional scheme based on the classical forward-time centred-space (FTCS) method for one-dimensional diffusion except when the diffusion number is 1/6 and the methods are identical. Results from some numerical experiments are presented.

    Notes: Abstract A numerical model is developed for steady turbulent flow through a fully open Starr-Edwards caged-ball prosthetic heart valve in the aortic position. An orthogonal boundary-fitted co-ordinate system is generated for the axisymmetric flow domain in the vicinity of the valve. The boundary lines follow the left ventricular wall, an idealised sinus, the aortic wall, and the ball occluder. The governing partial differentiation equations, written in a stream function-vorticity formulation, are recast into their curvilinear equivalents before being discretised into finite-difference equations. The equations are then solved iteratively. Regions of separated flow and elevated fluid stress are identified at several flow rates. Analysis of the numerical solutions reveals a simple power-law relationship between the computed turbulent shear stress and the steady flow rate at important flow field locations. The maximum turbulent shear stress occurs consistently near the sewing-ring tip. However, the peak turbulent shear stress in the sinus separation zone is observed to increase significantly with higher flow rates, exceeding values in many other regions. The numerical solutions compare satisfactorily with experimental measurements.

    Notes: A new compact second-order finite-difference method for solving the time-dependent one-dimensional constant-coefficient advection - diffusion equation is developed. It involves a spread of only two grid points in space and two levels in time. It may be evaluated in an explicit marching manner and requires the availability of only upstream boundary values. It is unconditionally stable and has the property of giving ‘non-negative’ values for a large range of Courant and diffusion numbers. For all grid Reynolds numbers greater than 2 it is shown to be more accurate than commonly used second-order methods, all of which involve a spread of three grid points in space.

The derivation uses the ‘modified equaiton’ approach, whereby the partial differential equation actually solved by the finite difference equation is determined. By investigating the largest error terms, the new method is compared with the standard explicit method and a method developed by Twizell.2 Theoretical conclusions have been verified by using the methods to solve a simple problem for which an exact solution is available.

    Notes: A family of five-point second-order forward-time centrred-space (FTCS) explicit finite-difference equations for solving the one-dimensional heat conduction (diffusion) equation with constant coefficients and Dirichlet boundary conditions is described.
