Notes: Summary The optimum temperature and time of incubation of the vaccinia hemagglutination-inhibition test were 37°C and 16 hours, respectively. A convenient method for preparing vaccinia hemagglutinating antigen consisted of infecting one-day-old primary chick embryo fibroblasts with a high multiplicity of vaccinia virus, employing a maintenance medium devoid of serum, preparing a 20-fold concentration of virus-infected cells, and finally extracting the concentrated antigen homogenate with genetron.

Notes: Summary The isolation and serologic identification by cross neutralization tests showed the presence of simian foamy virus serotypes 1 and 2 in primary rhesus monkey brain, spleen, and kidney cell cultures. The frequency of isolation of foamy viruses from brain and spleen cell cultures was 86% and from kidney cell cultures it was 36%. In primary spleen cell cultures 50% of the foamy virus isolates were type 2. Of the 14 animals from which foamy virus was isolated, only 4 demonstrated serum neutralizing antibody to the homologous serotype. The cytopathology of foamy viruses in the primary cell cultures is described.

Notes: Abstract Improved efforts to transfer the results of Federally-sponsored R&D to industry are cited often as an approach to help reverse declines in the rate of growth of U.S. industrial productivity and in the international competitiveness of certain industry sectors. As taxpayers and policy makers intensify their demands for accountability of public expenditures, technology transfer advocates must develop and apply analytic approaches which will measure the significant short and long-range impacts of Federally-sponsored programs, even though these impacts are especially difficult to measure directly. This paper suggests a framework for evaluating Federal technology transfer in terms of short and long range goals and outputs. It outlines critical determinants of program success and suggests performance indicators through which results could be measured.

Notes: Summary A highly hamster brain adapted strain of measles virus, capable of producing encephalitis in monkeys, inoculated into Vero cell cultures replicated in a suppressed growth cycle. No virus was released into the medium and the infected cells lacked specific virus determinants for hemadsorption. A complete replicative cycle was achieved after six subcultures of Vero cells and was accompanied by a partial drop in neurovirulence. However, hamster neuropathogenicity persisted throughout 26 Vero passages and was markedly higher than in non-brain passaged strains. High neurovirulence was associated with pronounced giant cell cytopathic effect and thermolability. On continuous passage these three properties dissociated at different rates indicating that they are independent properties of measles virus. The importance of their coincidence for the initiation of an encephalitic process in the brain of primates is stressed.

Notes: Conclusions Obviously, any attempt to infer relationships among the various logics on the basis of the present data is somewhat risky. It does not seem unreasonable, however, to appeal to extremes for a sketch of boundary conditions. If one can assume a reasonable extrapolation from the present sample to the adult population in general, it appears that: (1) ‘Math Logic’ is consistently employed across the various inference patterns by a very small proportion (usually less than 5%) of the population. (2) ‘Child's Logic’ — where modus ponens, contrapositive, inverse, and converse are viewed as valid inference patterns — is consistently employed by a large (i.e., about 33%) proportion of the population. (3) The various Quasi-Child Logics are used by a non-negligible proportion of the population. At the youngest age level represented in this sample, the nine-year-old fourth graders, the various ‘Quasi-Child Logics’ described above were used by about 30% of subjects with many subjects (about 20%) consistently using QCL 5. At the other extreme, in the medical school sample, the various Quasi-Child Logics are used consistently by 20% (or more) of subjects with QCL 1 the most commonly employed.

Notes: Conclusions The conclusions in this research are two: (1) Widespread and consistent use of ‘Child's Logic’ persists in college subjects. The consistent use of ‘Math Logic’ is employed by very few such students even in the face of a college-level course in logic. (2) ‘Child's Logic’ and ‘Math Logic’ seem not to exhaust the class of interpretations employed forp→q. Several other interpretations have been isolated and seem to be used consistently by a non-negligible fraction of college-level students. At this early stage of exploratory study it is not known how the interpretations relate to (or derive from) one another. The issue, we think, is one that is wide open for future research.
