Notes: There is strong evidence for the use of HMG Co-A reductase inhibitors (statins) for secondary prevention after myocardial infarction. Previous surveys suggest sub-optimal use of such secondary prevention measures. The national service framework (NSF) for coronary heart disease (CHD) has now set new standards for preventing and treating CHD. In our audit of 182 survivors of myocardial infarction in 1999, 86.2 per cent had cholesterols measured on admission, but only 39 per cent had statins prescribed on discharge. Our data provide information about base-line practice for the year immediately preceding the publication of the NSF and indicate that the average district general hospital may have a long way to go to meet the target set by the NSF.

Notes: This paper reports an experimental study of the multivariable control of a pilot-plant distillation column having a side stream as well as overhead and bottom products. A recently developed multivariable controller for systems having multiple time delays is implemented for the first time on an experimental process. The controller consists of a new multivariable time delay compensator coupled with traditional PI controllers. Realization is accomplished with a PDP 11 minicomputer. Improved system performance was observed with the delay compensator, especially in disturbance rejection.

Notes: This paper demonstrates how a recently developed observer for time delay systems may be used to estimate needed state variables for implementation of multivariable time delay compensation. The general results are illustrated by an example of a multireactor plant in which only one reactor concentration can be measured. The observer worked well in simulation for both multivarible PID control and multidelay compensated PID control and allowed both schemes to function with estimated state variables in the feedback loop.

Notes: A multivariable, multidelay compensator, capable of handling general, linear time delay problems is derived in a form applicable both in continuous and discrete time. The controller developed is shown to have the same structure as the linear-quadratic optimal feedback controller for input delays and reduces to the Smith predictor (and the analytical predictor) for the special case of a single time delay. Some examples representative of engineering practice are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the controller.

Notes: This article addresses the problem of estimating the states of a nonlinear plant that operates in multiple regimes and makes transitions between them. It is often difficult to obtain a single nonlinear model that accurately describes the plant in all regimes. Even if a global model is available, it sometimes cannot be used conveniently in an estimator. An alternative approach is presented where local linear models are identified at each different operating point, and estimation is performed by tracking the transitions from one regime to another. This is done by first estimating the validity of the local models on-line and then constructing a time-varying global model by interpolating between the local linear models. State and parameter estimation is then performed using this global model in a moving horizon estimator. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this method, it is applied to three test systems: a simple numerical example, a CSTR, and a copolymerization reactor.
