    Notes: The nascent rotational distributions of HCl (v=0, 1, and 2) generated in the photodissociation of three isomers of dichloroethenes (DCE) at 214 and 220 nm were measured under molecular beam conditions. HCl molecules were probed by a (2+1) resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization technique combined with time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The rotational distributions of vibrationally excited HCl (v=1 and 2) molecules were Boltzmann-type, while those of HCl (v=0) could not be represented by a Boltzmann distribution and consisted of two components. These results suggest that there are more than two processes in the photodissociation of DCE. Cl(2P3/2) and Cl*(2P1/2) could also be detected when DCE were photodissociated. The branching ratios of Cl*(2P1/2) to Cl(2P3/2) obtained in the present work were much larger than those obtained at 193 nm.

    Notes: Xenon cluster ions (Xen+) were produced by multiphoton ionization at 266 nm of neutral clusters resulting from supersonic expansion of xenon gas. Metastable dissociations Xen+→Xen-1+ + Xe (where n=2-19) were observed by an angular reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Clusters of some particular sizes were found to be especially unstable, the highest dissociation rate obtained being for Xe14+. Furthermore, the dissociation rate tended to increase with increase of cluster size (n), in agreement with the evaporative ensemble model which has been developed by Klots.

    Notes: Abstract Impact of energetic heavy particles on europium compound surfaces gives rise to radiative optical emission from reflected and sputtered particles and from the excited states of the solid compounds. In the present paper we discuss the optical spectrum and the sputtered secondary ion mass spectrum observed when solid europium oxide (Eu2O3) and europium chloride (EuCl3) are bombarded with 90 keV Ar+ ions from an ion accelerator. We observe the reduction reaction in solid europium chloride (EuCl3) by bombardment with a 20 μA/cm2 beam of 90 keV Ar+ ions.

    Notes: Abstract The mechanism of the reduction reaction of lanthanide(III) ions by hydrated electrons in polar solvents has been investigated. The theoretical rate constants for the reaction of hydrated electrons with a number of lanthanide ions have been calculated using the energy gap laws of the charge shift reaction(D+−A→D−A+) and compared with experimental values. With these results, we have explained the large difference of the reaction rates of lanthanide ions with hydrated electrons, which depend upon the kind of lanthanide ion. The calculated results agree almost quantitatively with the experimental values.
