Notes: Abstract Alpha-fluoromethylhistidine, α-FMH (L-641.575, Merck, Sharp and Dohme), a specific irreversible inhibitor of the mammalian histidine decarboxylase, was investigated for its effect on possible histamine symptoms in mastocytosis. Two patients were treated for 28 and 22 weeks respectively. The first patient had systemic mastocytosis and a severe malabsorption causing weight loss, excessive fecal fat losses and electrolyte disturbances, the main symptom being frequent diarrhoea. The second patient had mainly skin manifestations diagnosed as urticaria pigmentosa and the main symptom was pruritus. There were no side effects of the drug. The first patient produced formed stools after one week of treatment, concomitant with a decrease in plasma histamine and in urinary excretion of the main histamine metabolite tele-methylimidazoleacetic acid (MeImAA). In the second patient definite benefit of the treatment was observed after two months. However, changes in histamine parameters occurred earlier. Plasma histamine and urinary MeImAA were reduced after one week and in two or three weeks reached a steady-state level of about 25% of pretreatment values. The results indicate an effective inhibition of histamine synthesis in both patients but only the diarrhoea seemed to be causally related to the change in histamine metabolism.

Notes: Abstract The concentrations of Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn were determined inMytilus edulis from 48 locations in SW Iceland, as well as in moored mussles. The purpose was to establish baseline conditions and to evaluate anthropogenic influences. As reference stations, 34 locations away from population centres, were selected. Data on the metal content of soft tissues were examined in relation to both tissue weight and shell length. The data reveal Pb and Hg contamination in mussels from the vicinity of Reykjavík. Leaded petrol, paints and diffuse urban uses are considered as sources of these anomalies. A comparison is made with published mussel watch results.

Notes: Occupational skin diseases are among the most frequent work-related diseases in industrialized countries. Good occupational skin disease statistics exist in few countries. Questionnaire studies are needed to get more data on the epidemiology of occupational skin diseases. The Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire Group has developed a new questionnaire tool – Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire (NOSQ-2002) – for surveys on work-related skin disease and exposures to environmental factors. The 2 NOSQ-2002 questionnaires have been compiled by using existing questionnaires and experience. NOSQ-2002/SHORT is a ready-to-use 4-page questionnaire for screening and monitoring occupational skin diseases, e.g. in a population or workplace. All the questions in the short questionnaire (NOSQ-2002/SHORT) are included in the long version, NOSQ-2002/LONG, which contains a pool of questions to be chosen according to research needs and tailored to specific populations. The NOSQ-2002 report includes, in addition to the questionnaires, a comprehensive manual for researchers on planning and conducting a questionnaire survey on hand eczema and relevant exposures. NOSQ-2002 questionnaires have been compiled in English and translated into Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Icelandic. The use of NOSQ-2002 will benefit research on occupational skin diseases by providing more standardized data, which can be compared between studies and countries.

Notes: 1. A study on glacial stream ecosystems was carried out in six regions across Europe, from Svalbard to the French Pyrenees. The main aim was to test the validity of the conceptual model of Milner & Petts (1994) with regard to the zonation of chironomids of glacier-fed rivers along altitudinal and latitudinal gradient.2. Channel stability varied considerably, both on the latitudinal and altitudinal scale, being lowest in the northern regions (Svalbard, Iceland and Norway) and the Swiss Alps. Water temperature at the upstream sites was always 〈2 °C.3. There was a prominent difference in taxonomic richness between the Alpine and the northern European regions, with a higher number of taxa in the south. In all regions, the chironomid community was characterized by the genus Diamesa and the subfamily Orthocladiinae. Of a total of 63 taxa recorded, two (Diamesa bertrami and Orthocladius frigidus) were common in all the regions except Svalbard.4. On the basis of cluster analysis, seven distinct groups of sites were evident amongst glacial-fed systems of the five regions (Pyrenees excluded). This classification separated the glacier-fed streams on geographical, latitudinal and downstream gradients.5. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) of environmental variables was carried out using 41 taxa at 105 sites. Slope, water depth, distance from source, water temperature and the Pfankuch channel stability index were found to be the major explanatory environmental variables. The analysis separated Diamesinae and typical upstream orthoclads from the other chironomids by low temperature and high channel instability.6. In all six regions, Diamesa was present closest to the glacier. Within 200 m of the glacier snout, other genera of Diamesinae were found together with Orthocladiinae. Pioneer taxa like Diamesa species coexisted with later colonizers like Eukiefferiella minor/fittkaui in relatively unstable channels.7. The longitudinal succession of chironomid assemblages across altitudinal and latitudinal gradients in glacial streams followed the same pattern, with similar genera and groups of species. The general aspects of the conceptual model of Milner & Petts (1994) were supported. However, Diamesa species have wider temperature limits than predicted and other Diamesinae as well as Orthocladiinae colonize metakryal habitats.

Notes: Summary Chronic urticaria is a disease for which the available range of treatment modalities is limited. Ultraviolet radiation has recently been shown to affect histamine release from mast cells. We therefore studied the effects of PUVA and UVA on chronic urticaria. Nineteen patients took part in the study, which was designed as a randomized double-blind study. Eleven patients received PUVA, and 8 received UVA plus a placebo. In the PUVA group, 7 patients showed improvement, 3 noticed no change, and 1 became worse. In the group that received UVA plus placebo, 5 patients experienced an improvement, whereas the other 3 showed no change. The differences between the groups were not statistically significant. However, the probability of achieving this degree of improvement in both groups just by chance is less than 1%. Consequently, the improvement noted could have been due to either UVA alone or a placebo effect. It is concluded that PUVA is not better than UVA in the treatment of chronic urticaria.

Notes: Abstract A study of the vertical distribution of all instars of chironomid larvae was carried out in the littoral zone of a lake in southwest England over a period of 14 months. Samples were collected every month by using a 44 mm (i.d.) piston core sampler. Each core sample was sectioned at 1 cm intervals and preserved immediately after collection. The density of larvae in the study area varied from a low of 16,368 larvae m−2 in August 1989 to maximum values of 106,249 and 129,954 larvae m−2 in June 1989 and May 1990, respectively. During spring and early summer, first instar larvae comprised approximately half of the larval population. No significant differences were found in seasonal vertical distribution of the chironomid larvae. Over 85% of the larval population inhabited the top 6 cm of the sediment, with the first and second instar larvae of all taxa most abundant in the top 1 cm section.
