    Notes: Abstract The copepod Acartia tonsa displayed nearly two-fold higher ingestion rates on faster-growing cells of the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii compared to ingestion rates on slower-growing cells of that species at the same cell concentration. Ingestion rates on slow-growing cells were also enhanced by the addition of cell-free aliquots of algal exudate to the experimental feeding chambers. In addition, the faster-growing algal cells were selectively ingested by the copepod when the two cell types were mixed together in different proportions, indicating that physiological differences between growing cells are a critical factor in the food detection/selection process of zooplankton. Consideration of cell carbon, nitrogen, and protein composition suggests that the copepods are maximizing nitrogenous ingestion (total protein and/or nitrogen). Selectivity for cells with higher protein content results in a higher daily protein ration, even if the selection process results in a decreased rate of ingestion in mixtures of cell types.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of nutrient deprivation on cell-cycle progression was examined in two phytoplankton species, the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii (actin) and the coccolithophorid Hymenomonas carterae (cocco II). The diatom was starved for nitrogen, silicon or both, whereas only nitrogen limitation was examined in H. carterae. In both species, nitrogen-starved cells were arrested in the early part of the cell cycle (G1 phase). In the diatom, silicon-starvation arrested cells in late G1 phase and also in the last part of the cell cycle (G2+M). In all cases, cell-cycle arrest could be reversed by addition of fresh medium, but cell-cycling times during the first generation were increased in comparison to those in nutrient replete, steady-state growth conditions. These results supply evidence for simultaneous dual-nutrient limitation of population growth and provide a mechanistic interpretation for the division patterns observed in cultures where nutrients are supplied periodically.

    Notes: Abstract To obtain a direct measurement of the importance of Prochloron sp. to the ascidian Didemnum molle, ascidian colonies from Lizard Island Lagoon, Great Barrier Reef, were grown for 9 d at 0, 10, 40 and 100% sunlight in situ using unidirectional flow chambers. Growth (wet weight) was enhanced up to 40% of full sunlight, at which point growth appears to have been light-saturated. Colonies in 10 and 40% sunlight responded by (1) climbing up the sides of the growth chambers, and (2) flattening out to a more encrusting morphology; also (3) the chlorophyll content of three colonies in zero sunlight decreased by 〉80%, yet the ascidians remained healthy and did not lose weight. These data show that although the symbiosis may not be obligatory for D. molle, the ascidian's growth is enhanced by Prochloron sp., and the morphology of the ascidian colony is affected by its photobiology.

    Notes: The temperature-dependent optical dephasing of anthracene, 9-methylanthracene, and 2-methylanthracene monomers in phenanthrene host crystals has been measured using photon echo experiments. Despite large linear electron–acoustic phonon coupling, all three systems dephase because of coupling to pseudolocal modes (local motions of the guest molecule). Computer simulations of the three systems calculate the pseudolocal mode eigenvalues and eigenvectors. In contrast to previous discussions in the literature which describe pseudolocal modes as librations, the predicted eigenvalues are in reasonable agreement with the measured pseudolocal mode energies. The predicted eigenvectors are combinations of translational motion along the long molecular axis and rotational motion about the out-of-plane axis of the guest. Differences in site energies for various locations and orientations of the methyl group are calculated.

    Notes: Rainfall, stream flow and groundwater have been sampled systematically throughout Nebraska since 1970 and analyzed for mineral N and P and the character of any sediments contained. Fallout N and P in rainfall ranges from 5–14 pounds N and 1 pounds P/A/yr, increasing from west to east across the state with increasing rainfall. The amount of NH4-N is essentially double that of NO3-N. The mean concentration of 2ppm N in rainfall is four times the mean N concentration of streams, demonstrating a substantial depolluting action of soils and growing crops. Where nutrient levels of streams are elevated, cause can usually be traced especially to industrial, sewage or livestock waste intrusion and not to crop production practices. The only significant quantity of nutrient N and P induced by cultivation is that accompanying sediments from eroded fields. The P content of Nebraska groundwater has remained essentially constant during the past 10 years while average NO3-N has increased slightly, a period during which farmer fertilizer use quadrupled. During the same time, irrigation acreage has increased by 50%, livestock numbers by 30%, with corresponding growth in human population and attendant industries. Indications are that irrigation practice has contributed more than any other factor to the small increase in groundwater NO3-N recorded. Individual cases do exist where groundwater NO3-N has increased substantially, especially in areas of intensive irrigation agriculture on very sandy soils and elsewhere with irrigation development in the proximity of ancient NO3-N deposits in mantlerock above the water table.
