Notes: Abstract Most classical local stereovision matching algorithms use features representing objects in both images and compute the minimum difference attribute values. We have verified that the differences in attributes for the true matches cluster in a cloud around a centre. The correspondence is established on the basis of the minimum squared Mahalanobis distance between the difference of the attributes for a current pair of features and the cluster centre (similarity constraint). We introduce a new supervised learning strategy derived from the Learning Vector Quantization (LVQ) approach to get the best cluster centre. Additionally, we obtain the contribution or specific weight of each attribute for matching. We improve the learning law introducing a variable learning rate. The supervised learning and the improved learning law are the most important findings, which are justified by the computed better results compared with classical local stereovision matching methods without learning and with other learning strategies. The method is illustrated with 47 pairs of stereo images.

Keywords: Key words:Bone mineral density (BMD) – Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) – Femoral neck – Hispanic – Lumbar spine – Mexican women

    Topics: Medicine
Notes: Abstract: The aim of this study was to generate standard curves for normal spinal and femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD) in Mexican women using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), to analyze geographic differences and to compare these with “Hispanic” reference data to determine its applicability. This was a cross-sectional study of 4460 urban, clinically normal, Mexican women, aged 20–90 years, from 10 different cities in Mexico (5 in the north, 4 in the center and 1 in the southeast) with densitometry centers. Women with suspected medical conditions or who had used drugs affecting bone metabolism, were excluded. Lumbar spine BMD was significantly higher (1.089 ± 0.18 g/cm2) in women from the northern part of Mexico, with intermediate values in the center (1.065 ± 0.17 g/cm2) and lower values (1.013 ± 0.19 g/cm2) in the southeast (p〈0.0001). Similarly, femoral neck BMD was significantly higher in women from the north (0.895 ± 0.14 g/cm2), intermediate in the center (0.864 ± 0.14 g/cm2) and lower (0.844 ± 0.14 g/cm2) in the southeast part of Mexico (p〈0.0001). Northern Mexican women tend to be taller and heavier than women from the center and, even more, than those from the southeast of Mexico (p〈0.0001). However, these differences in BMD remained significant after adjustment for weight (p〈0.0001). A significant loss (p〈0.0001) in BMD was observed from 40 to 69 years of age at the lumbar spine and up to the eighth decade at the femoral neck. Higher and lower lumbar spine values, as compared with the “Hispanic” population, were observed in Mexican mestizo women from the northern and southeastern regions, respectively. In conclusion, there are geographic differences in weight and height of Mexican women, and in BMD despite adjustment for weight.

Notes: Summary A synthesis concept has been developed for selective cleavage of cis-1,4-poly(isoprene) — guayule or natural rubber — with synchroneous functionalization, conversion of the telechelics to bifunctional macroinitiators and subsequent polymerization of the hard blocks. Thermoreversibly crosslinked poly(methylmethacrylate)-(b-cis 1,4-poly(isoprene)) threeblock copolymers synthesized in this way have been characterized, and mechanical properties have been measured. In parallel α, ω — poly(isobutylene) diols capable to form bifunctional macroinitiators have been synthesized.

Notes: Summary The karyotype ofMicrotus cabrerae, a species endemic to Spain, is described. It comprises 2n=54 chromosomes, with a ‘fundamental number’ of 64, and with very large sex chromosomes. An evolutionary relationship between this species andM. chrotorrhinus is suggested.

Notes: Abstract A predictive method designed to obtain the thermal conductivities of one-component dense fluids is described. This method is based on the revised Enskog theory. Here, an effective state-dependent hard-sphere diameter is used to obtain the hard-sphere diameter needed by the revised Enskog theory in order to deal with actual fluids. In addition, we introduce the contribution of the internal degrees of freedom through the Mason-Monchick procedure. Our predictions for noble gases and hydrocarbons, at high density, are compared with predictions coming from the conformal solution model, with empirical correlation schemes, and with experimental data. A very satisfactory agreement is found.

Notes: Abstract 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) has been used as a copper corrosion inhibitor in 0.100 mol L−1 KCl solution. The inhibition was studied as a function of the MPS pretreatment concentration in ethanol. The MPS concentration used was between 1.0 × 10−8 mol L−1 and 1.0 × 10−1 mol L−1. A freshly-cleaned Cu electrode was inserted in an ethanolic solution of MPS for 30 min for pretreatment, and was then exposed to a 0.100 mol L−1 KCl aqueous solution for 1 h. From the polarization resistance, the inhibition efficiency improved with increase in MPS concentration during the pretreatment. The MPS adsorption on Cu followed a Langmuir adsorption behaviour. However, at MPS concentrations larger than 1.0 × 10−4 mol L−1 the inhibition decreased. Moreover, the inhibition efficiency decreased with increase in the exposure time of the MPS modified Cu electrode in the KCl aqueous solution. Polarization studies suggest that MPS is an anodic as well as a cathodic inhibitor, in the presence of dissolved oxygen. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the Cu samples showed that the organic compound modifies the Cu surface and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies indicated that MPS protects the Cu surface when exposed for 350 h to laboratory environment. Polarized grazing angle Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR) microscopy analysis determined the presence of a polymer on the Cu surface.

Notes: Abstract A heuristic approach to the problem of assigning a set of preemptible resource-sharing and blockable real-time tasks to be executed in a set of heterogeneous processors communicated through an interprocessor network, is presented. The problem is NP-hard. The empty-slots method is used to test the RM schedulability in each processor. There are placement, time, memory, communication and precedence constraints. A general expression for the modification of hard-precedence deadlines of related tasks executing in the same or in different processors is given. The effects of the Average Processor Utilization Factor and the Network Bandwidth on the number of solutions found are shown and discussed through systematic sets of examples. Also, Success Ratios are obtained and plotted vs. Average Processor Utilization Factors for different Network Bandwidths. Results obtained are compared to those obtained by other methods.

Notes: This work is aimed at determining the influence of molecular weight distribution, branch content, and thermal history on the dynamic mechanical properties of four high density polyethylenes. Molecular segregation as a function of crystallization conditions has been measured by means of differential thermal analysis, whereas infrared spectroscopy allowed us to relate the structural changes introduced by the use of different crystallization conditions with both molecular segregation and dynamic mechanical properties. The α-relaxation is the most affected transition by thermal treatments. Molecular segregation plays an important role in the mechanical behavior when the amount of segregated material is big enough as to shield the effect due to the isothermally thickened crystals. The presence of a high degree of segregation brings about asymmetry in the α-relaxation peak as well as detectable changes in the reorganization factor (which defines the degree of order within the system) obtained by infrared spectroscopy. The supermolecular structure is found not to affect the dynamic mechanical properties. The β-relaxation depends on the branch content, whereas the λ-relaxation remains constant regardless of structural characteristics and thermal conditions.
