Notes: In mathematical statistical filtering the deconvolution problem can be solved by two different methods:〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1by inverse filtering2by calculating the prediction error. Both methods are well known in the theory of Wiener filters. If, however, the generating process of the signal is known and can be described by a set of linear first order differential equations, then the Kalman filter can also be used to solve the deconvolution problem. In the case of the inverse filtering method this was shown by Bayless and Brigham (1970). But, while their method can only be used if the original signal is a colored random process, this paper shows that in the case of a white process the prediction error filtering method is a more appropriate approach. The method is extremely efficient and simple. This can be demonstrated by an example which maybe of special interest for seismic exploration.

Notes: Summary In 32 rabbits and 12 cats the carotid bifurcation including the glomus artery was partially isolated vascularly and connected to an arteriovenous shunt which permitted to decrease the blood pressure in this area independently from systemic pressure. The carotid body blood supply was examined in every preparation by injecting plastic into the arterial system after the experiment. In rabbits lowering of this local pressure did — with one exception — not cause any chemoreflex increase of respiration or systemic blood pressure until sinus pressure had fallen to values between 6 and 18 mm Hg. This threshold was not influenced by the additional decrease of systemic blood pressure, by breathing 13.7% O2 in N2, or by anesthetizing the animals with chloralose-urethane instead of nembutal. In most cats, however, lowering the sinus pressure to 40–74 mm Hg already caused a distinct activation of chemoreflexes. The very low threshold pressure for excitation of carotid chemoreceptors in the rabbit explains earlier findings that, in this species, chemoreflexes do not participate in the regulation of blood pressure during haemorrhage.
