    Notes: In recent years, developments in the field of lightweight armour have been of primary importance to the defence industry. This necessity has led to many organisations adopting composite armours comprising both the traditional heavy armours and new lighter weight ceramic armours. The numerical modelling of metal based armour systems has been well documented over the years using purely continuum based methods; and also the modelling of brittle systems using discrete element methods, therefore it is the objective of this paper to demonstrate how a coupled finite and discrete element approach, can be used in the further understanding of the quantitative response of ceramic systems when subjected to dynamic loadings using a combination of adaptive continuum techniques and discrete element methods. For the class of problems encountered within the defence industry, numerical modelling has suffered from one principal weakness; for many applications the associated deformed finite element mesh can no longer provide an accurate description of the deformed material, whether this is due to large ductile deformation, or for the case of brittle materials, degradation into multiple bodies. Subsequently, two very different approaches have been developed to combat such deficiencies, namely the use of adaptive remeshing for the ductile type materials and a discrete fracture insertion scheme for the modelling of material degradation. Therefore, one of the primary objectives of this paper is to present examples demonstrating the potential benefits of explicitly coupling adaptive remeshing methods to the technique of discrete fracture insertion in order to provide an adaptive discontinuous solution strategy, which is computationally robust and efficient.

    Notes: This paper proposes an energy-based general polygon to polygon normal contact model in which the normal and tangential directions, magnitude and reference contact position of the normal contact force are uniquely defined. The model in its final form is simple and elegant with a clear geometric perspective, and also possesses some advanced features. Furthermore, it can be extended to a more complex situations and in particular, it may also provide a sound theoretical foundation to possibly unifying existing contact models for all types of (convex) objects.

    Notes: Because of the unrealistic demand of computer resources in terms of memory and CPU times for the direct numerical simulation of practical peen forming processes, a two-stage combined finite/discrete element and explicit/implicit solution strategy is proposed in this paper. The procedure involves, at the first stage, the identification of the residual stress/strain profile under particular peening conditions by employing the combined finite/discrete approach on a small scale sample problem, and then at the second stage, the application of this profile to the entire workpiece to obtain the final deformation and stress distribution using an implicit static analysis. The motivation behind the simulation strategy and the relevant computational and implementation issues are discussed. The numerical example demonstrates the ability of the proposed scheme to simulate a peen forming process.

    Notes: Some issues related to effective parallel implementation of the combined finite-discrete element approach on PC clusters are discussed. Attention is focused on the interprocessor communications. Three communication schemes suitable for different problems are presented. The worker-to-manager scheme is simple to implement. The neighbour-to-neighbour scheme is sophisticated with regard to programming, and requires extra memory space, but has good overall performance for larger problems. The mixed worker-manager scheme can balance the difficulty in programming and the overall communication performance. The effects of subdomain buffer zone on communications are also demonstrated by numerical examples.

    Notes: In the first part of this series of papers on the combined finite/discrete element simulation of shot peening processes, different contact interaction laws for 2D cases are extensively studied with special attention given to the proper selection of the parameter values involved, which is one of the key issues for successful direct simulation. In addition, computational issues including contact forces, partial contact, energy dissipation, and rheological representation are addressed. Numerical examples for a single shot impact system simulated by the coupled finite/discrete element method using different interaction laws are provided to verify the proposed approaches. The results are also compared with those obtained by using only finite element methods. Findings obtained by performing 2D simulations will, in the subsequent article, be used in realistic computational simulations of 3D shot peening processes.

    Notes: Following earlier work on the combined finite/discrete element simulation of shot peening process in 2D case, 3D representation of the problem is established with respect to DE modelling and contact interaction laws. An important relevant computational issue regarding the critical time step is carefully studied, and a new time stepping scheme that can ensure both short and long term stability of the contact models is developed. Numerical tests are performed to evaluate the proposed normal and frictional contact interaction laws with various model parameters. The influences of single and multiple shot impact, as well as element sizes are also numerically investigated. The established contact interaction laws can also be applied to other multi-body dynamic simulations.

    Notes: This paper outlines a dynamic domain decomposition-based parallel strategy for combined finite/discrete element analysis of multi-fracturing solids and discrete systems. Attention is focused on the parallelised interaction detection between discrete objects. Two graph representation models for discrete objects in contact are proposed which lay the foundation of the current development. In addition, a load imbalance detection and re-balancing scheme is also suggested to enhance the parallel performance. Finally, numerical examples are provided to illustrate the parallel performance achieved with the current implementation.
