Notes: An avian piroplasm, Nuttallia balearicae sp. n., is described from captive Balearica p. pavonina and B. p. gibbericeps. Other avian piroplasms and their validity and taxonomic status are discussed. The possible route of transmission of these parasites is also considered.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. Eimeria bateri, a parasite of the Indian quail, was described from laboratory infections in Japanese quail. First generation schizonts developed in the glands of the duodenum and upper intestine. Second, 3rd and 4th generation schizonts and gametocytes occurred in the villous epithelium. There was a gradual spread along the small intestine until the whole organ was affected. The prepatent period was 4 days and the patent period 6 days. Graded doses from 5,000 to 1,280,000 oocysts produced very little pathogenic effect in young quail. E. bateri did not infect young pheasants or chicks.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. It is evident from a survey of the Russian literature that many species of avian haematozoa recorded do not meet the basic criteria required by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Thus 28 species of Haemoproteus and 4 species of Leucocytozoon are considered to be nomina nuda, while 1 species, Leucocytozoon turtur orientalis is a synonym of L. marchouxi.

Notes: Summary The argasid tick,Ornithodoros moubata porcinus, is a natural reservoir and vector of African swine fever virus. The stability of ASFV in dead ticks was first determined and then laboratory-reared, nymphal ticks were infected by feeding on viraemic domestic pigs; “Uganda” strain virus multiplied and persisted over periods of 13–15 months in 70–75% of ticks. Infected tampans regularly transmitted ASF to domestic pigs, even when fed singly; in only about two-thirds of cases was virus excreted in the coxal fluid. “Tengani” strain virus, however, produced persistent infection in but 5% of ticks, following the ingestion of approximately 104 to 105 HAD50. The minimum infective dose of 3 strains of ASFV for ticks collected in Uganda, was investigated by the capillary-feeding technique. Some ticks were infected by 100.9 to 101.9 HAD50 of “Uganda” virus and virtually all by doses ⪖ 104.0 HAD50; a recent warthog isolate in a dose of 105.0 HAD50 caused persistent infection in 60% of ticks, whilst 104.0 HAD50 of a tick isolate produced only 40% persistent infections. Some Uganda ticks exhibited virus proliferation of at least 3–4 log10 units and transmitted ASFV to pigs during natural feeding; virus was sometimes excreted in the coxal fluid. These results were discussed in relation to the maintenance of ASFV and the probable sites of localisation in the tick; ASFV has the essential characteristics of a tick-borne arbovirus.

Notes: [Auszug] Recent examinations of blood films taken from the peripheral blood of nineteen sparrows which had become trapped in experimental animal buildings at Weybridge showed two of the birds to be infected with Haemoproteus. One bird had a pure infection of Haemoproteus, the other a mixed infection of ...

Notes: [Auszug] In spite of overwhelming field evidence that wild Suidae are the primary source of virus for domestic pigs in Africa, the agent does not spread readily by contact in experimental conditions, either from warthog to warthog (Phacochoerus aethiopicus, Pallas), or from this natural reservoir host to ...

Notes: Summary A series of experiments, designed to improve the feeding methods used for the tickRhipicephalus appendiculatus in East Coast fever research, were carried out in the laboratory using rabbits and cattle as tick hosts. When nymphal ticks were fed on cattle in varying numbers, large numbers of ticks took longer to engorge and mean engorged weight of tick batches was lower, than for ticks fed in smaller numbers. Two thousand nymphs per ear fed satisfactorily, and this number is now used as a standard.

Notes: Summary Captive genets were offered the ears of steers which had died of East Coast fever (E.C.F.), and on which nymphalRhipicephalus appendiculatus were feeding. The genets fed on the ears and the ticks re-attached to the genets and completed their engorgement. After moulting, the resultant adult ticks were applied to a steer which had a typical fatal E.C.F. reaction.
