Notes: Summary. During the period from 1 October 1979 to 31 January 1981, 548 estimations of maturity were made on 523 infants at the Department of Medical Obstetrics of the Neukolln Hospital in Berlin, using the motor nerve conduction velocity (NCV) of the ulnar nerve combined with the Farr system. The mean value of the NCV increases from 13.0 m/s in the 33rd week of gestation to 30.4 m/s in the 44th week. Over the whole range the NCV showed a highly significant correlation (r=0.946, P〈0.00001) with the gestational age of the infant, whereas the Farr system deviated strongly in a false positive direction up to the 38th week of gestation. The measurement of the NCV of the ulnar nerve is a simple and very precise postpartum estimation of the gestational age.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Serum concentrations of the pregnancy-specific β1-glycoprotein (SP 1) and human placental lactogen (HPL) were measured by radioimmunoassay in 372 blood samples obtained from 40 women in the second half of a normal singleton pregnancy. The mean level of SP 1 steadily increased from 40 μg/ml in the 22nd week of pregnancy to 168 μg/ml in the 36th week of gestation and thereafter reached a plateau. The half-life of SP 1 during the first week after delivery was about 39 h. The clinical value of SP 1 in comparison to HPL estimations was assessed in a prospective study of a few high risk pregnancies. There were no significant differences between serum SP 1 and HPL levels in pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia with or without intrauterine growth retardation and in twin pregnancies. Serum HPL and SP 1 levels were equally effective in predicting placental insufficiency with fetal growth retardation.

Notes: Summary A simple on-line data collection system was developed for facilitating documentation and quality assessment in perinatal medicine. A microcomputer is used for acquisition of the most important obstetrical data. The system substitutes the handwritten birth notification form and permits automatic medical reporting. In addition an information system for day-to-day clinical routine is provided. Special programmes allow the complication of statistical analysis as requested by the government as well as for actually internal quality assessment.

Notes: Abstract Influence of the structure of styrene and polystyrene modified PE membranes on their permeation properties is presented. It is demonstrated that the temperature of styrene treatment (N membranes) and the presence of polystyrene (P membranes) results in high differentiation of the permeation properties. SALS studies have shown the structural reorganization depending on modification extent and diffusion of the penetrant. It is also shown that the morphology of the dried films remains unchanged. This work proves that the appropriate modification of PE films results in membranes with controlled permeation behavior.

Notes: Abstract In this paper the structure correlation of PE-PS gradient polymers, modified by styrene LDPE films with their mechanical and rheo-optical properties, is presented. The specific structural changes of both the investigated materials can be demonstrated by using dynamic mechanical deformation studies. The influence of the penetrant on LDPE crystalline and amorphous phase order is shown. Some interesting mechanical behaviour of the gradient polymers, depending on the polystyrene contents, is discussed.
