    Notes: Summary In this paper a priori error estimates are derived for the discretization error which results when the linear Navier-Stokes equations are solved by a method which closely resembles the MAC-method of Harlow and Welch. General boundary conditions are permitted and the estimates are in terms of the discreteL 2 norm. A solvability result is given which also applies to a generalization of the method to the nonlinear case. This generalization is used in the last section to produce a numerical solution to the problem of flow around an obstacle.

    Notes: The dual variable method for Delaunay triangulations is a network-theoretic method that transforms a set of primitive variable finite difference or finite element equations for incompressible flow into an equivalent system which is one-fifth the size of the original. Additionally, it eliminates the pressures from the system and produces velocities that are exactly discretely divergence-free. In this paper new discretizations of the convection term are presented for Delaunay triangulations, the dual variable method is extended to tessellations that contain obstacles, and an efficient algorithm for the solution of the dual variable system is described.

The flow is assumed to be thermally expandable; that is, the density varies only with temperature. A characteristic- like (CL) method is used to discretize the temporal and convective terms. The dual variable method reduces the size of the discrete system by a factor of five.

    Notes: The numerical solution of two-dimensional, transient, incompressible Navier-Stokes problems is considered. The dual variable method, originally developed in the context of a finite difference discretization, is a technique to considerably reduce the size of the linear system to be solved at each time step. The steps involved in the method are (1) the determination of the rank of the discrete divergence operator, A, (2) the determination of a basis for the null space of A, N(A), and (3) the calculation of a particular solution of the discrete continuity equation.A finite element implementation of the method is presented using quadrilateral piecewise bilinear velocity/constant pressure elements. Algorithms for the determination of a basis for N(A) and a particular solution are presented. Numerical comparisons of primitive versus dual variable formulations on several problems demonstrate the advantage of the dual variable method, in terms of both execution speed and memory requirements.
