Notes: Classical supraclavicular brachial plexus block was used as the sole anaesthetic technique in 200 children aged between 5 and 12 years undergoing closed reduction of arm fractures. The local anaesthetic used was lidocaine 1.5% with epinephrine. The block was graded as satisfactory if surgical manipulation could be performed without discomfort and unsatisfactory if general anaesthesia had to be given. In 182 children, the procedure was carried out under the block alone, whereas the remaining 18 patients required general anaesthesia. The mean (SD) time required for performing the block was 9.1 (3.7) min and the mean (SD) time to sensory blockade was 8.3 (2.3) min. The mean duration of analgesia was ≈ 3.5 h. There were few complications, with no incidence of pneumothorax in any patient. The acceptability of the block by the children and the parents was 72 and 85%, respectively. The classical supraclavicular brachial plexus block was found to be acceptable, effective and with a good success rate.

Notes: Abstract As the isotopic shift for the vibration rotation band is generally much larger than the isotopic shift for the corresponding electronic transitions and thus facilitating separation of isotopic lines, the vibration rotation bands of SiO may find use in the determination of isotopic abundance ratio Si28 ∶ Si29 ∶ Si30. To help identify the isotopic lines of SiO the wavenumbers for Si29O16 and Si30O16 have been calculated with an uncertainty of ±0.05 cm−1. Taking note of the fact that SiO shows strong vibration rotation bands in the spectra of some cool stars the equivalent width calculations for P(40) and R(40) lines of the 1-0 and 2-1 vibration rotation bands of Si29O16 and Si30O16 have been made at the centre of the disc for the model ZSM-74 using two values of isotopic abundance ratio and three values of dissociation energy. The search for the isotopic lines of SiO near 7 to 8μm is recommended in low noise centre to limb sunspot spectrum scans with a view to help improve the isotopic ratio Si28 ∶ Si29 ∶ Si30 and oscillator strengths for the vibration-rotation transitions.

Notes: Abstract Assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium and the same relative abundances to prevail both in photosphere and faculae, the concentration-optical depth curves for molecules CH, NH, OH, C2, CN and CO have been obtained for the four combinations of two photospheric and two facular models and the relative excesses α of these molecules in the photosphere over those in faculae have been calculated. The change of photospheric model significantly affects the relationship, for a given facular model, between α and D 0, the dissociation energy of the molecule concerned. Besides, the average depth of formation in the facular models and photospheric models shows a relationship with D 0.

Notes: Abstract The expected equivalent widths of individual rotational lines of the most intense Q 2 branch of the 0-0 band of the A 2Σ-X2Πi; system of S32H and S34H have been calculated in the umbral spectrum for five disk positions using Zwaan's (1974) sunspot model. Percentage abundance of S34 in the terrestrial case has been considered valid in our calculations. Strong lines of S32H and S34H of the A-X band system should be detectable in the sunspot spectrum. The molecule SH may play a possible role as a major opacity source in the ultraviolet spectrum of sunspots along with the molecule OH in the upper layers (up to τ 0.5μm = 1.0) wherefrom most of the continuum arises. Study of this molecule in the umbral spectrum may also provide the solar isotopic abundance ratio N(S32)/N(S34).

Notes: Abstract Using KPNO helium 10830 Å synoptic charts of Carrington rotations 1716 through 1739, and by assembling a time sequence representing single latitude zone, rotational properties of coronal holes for five zones of latitudes (±10°, ±20° – ±40°, and ±40° – ±60°) have been examined. It seems that the rotation period of coronal holes is a function of latitude, thus reflecting differential rotation of coronal holes.

Notes: Abstract Phencyclidine (PCP) is a potent psychotomimetic drug of abuse and has profound effect on the functioning of the central nervous system (CNS). Many of the CNS functions are known to be mediated by calcium (Ca2+). In the present study we have investigated the effects of PCP on Ca2+ ATPase activity in rat brain both in vitro and in vivo. For in vitro studies, synaptic membrane fractions prepared from normal rat brain were incubated with PCP at different concentrations (25-100 μM) before the addition of substrate. For n vivo studies, rats were treated with a single moderate dose of PCP (10 mg/kg, IP) and animals were sacrificed at 1,2, 6 and 12 h after treatment. Ca2+ ATPase activity in synaptic membrane fractions was assayed by estimation of inorganic phosphate. PCP inhibited the Ca2+ ATPase in vitro in a concentration dependent manner with significant effect at 50 and 100 μM. A significant time-dependent reduction of the Ca2+ ATPase activity was evident in vivo. As early as 2 h after the treatment of rats with PCP the ATPase activity was significantly reduced. The reduction of Ca2+ ATPase observed even at 12 h after treatment suggesting a prolonged presence of the drug in the brain tissue. Further, kinetic studies in vitro indicated PCP to be a competitive inhibitor of Ca2+ ATPase with respect to the substrate, ATP. The present findings indicate that PCP inhibits synaptic membrane Ca2+ ATPase thus altering cellular Ca2+ homeostasis in CNS which may partially explain the pharmacological effects of the drug and/or its neurotoxicity.

Notes: Abstract In the umbral atmosphere the depth dependence of the opacity due to the vibration rotation bands of various abundant molecules in the wavelength region 1 μm to 10 μm has been calculated. In the higher layers of the umbral atmosphere, the molecular opacity seems to dominate the opacity due to the negative hydrogen ion.
