Abstract An apparatus, that allows simultaneous measurements to be made of excess osmotic pressure and optical diffraction of polymer colloid dispersions, has been constructed. Results are reported for monodisperse polystyrene latices at several salt concentrations. An interesting feature of the results is a clear indication of a co-existence region occurring with particles of 182 nm diameter in sodium chloride concentrations of 10−4 mol dm−3
