Notes: Hydrotropic block copolymers, consisting of a hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)block and a hydrotropic polymer, poly(2-(4-(vinyl benzyloxy)-N,N-diethylnicotinamide))[P(VBODENA)], block, were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) foraqueous solubilization of paclitaxel, a representative poorly water-soluble drug. These polymersshowed an excellent solubilizing effect for paclitaxel in aqueous media in comparison with thecorresponding hydrotropic agent and a control micelle (PEG-PLA) and such effect was significantlydependent on the polymer concentration and composition. Paclitaxel could be solubilized intopolymer micelles in aqueous media without use of an organic solvent. Due to their promisingproperties such as micellar characteristics and hydrotropic solubilization, the hydrotropic polymermicelle system can be useful for formulation of paclitaxel and other poorly soluble drugs

Notes: Superporous hydrogels (SPHs) with interconnected pores of several hundredsmicrometers were prepared using radical polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide(AAm) in the presence of N,N’-methylenebisacrylamide (BIS). A gas blowing method usingbicarbonate as a foaming agent was applied to introduce the porous structure under different pHconditions (pH 2~7). The pore structures of the prepared SPHs were examined by a scanningelectron microscope. The SPHs obtained at pHs of 4.5 and 4.75 were observed to have ainterconnected pore structure with homogeneous distribution and swell to an equilibrium statewithin several minutes. The O2 plasma reactor has been used for surface modification of SPHs. Theplasma-treated SPHs showed much faster swelling behavior due to the improvement of surfacehydrophilicity. The swelling ratio of SPHs was also enhanced by using a wetting agent, such astriacetin and glycerol, during a washing procedure
