Notizen: Abstract We study theoretically the drift of resonant particles in a buffer medium when a traveling light wave impinges on the medium, with allowance for the velocity dependence of the transport collision rate. When the pressure of light dominates over the light-induced drift (low pressure of the buffer gas or the drift of conduction electrons in semiconductors), we discover a new sudden transformation of the spectral dependence of the drift velocity of the resonant particles: Instead of the ordinary bell-shaped function representing the velocity spectrum we have a double-humped curve with deep dip at the center of the absorption line. We show that the largest transformation of the drift velocity spectrum occurs in the atmosphere of a heavy buffer gas in the case of Coulomb interaction between the resonant and buffer particles. The transformation effect is caused by the variation of the transport rate of the collisions of the resonant and buffer particles due to the recoil effect in the absorption of radiation.

Notizen: Abstract This paper is a theoretical study of the spectral features of the velocity of light-induced drift (LID) of lithium atoms (7Li and 6Li) in a binary mixture of noble gases: Ne + Ar, Ne + Kr, and Ne + Xe. The spectral shape of the LID signal is predicted to depend strongly on the fraction ξ of neon in the buffer mixture in the range ξ≈0.8–0.9 (ξ=N Ne/N b, where N Ne is the neon concentration, and N b is the total concentration of the buffer particles). When the velocity of anomalous LID is treated as a function of the radiation frequency, it is found to have one, three, five, or seven zeros and to differ substantially from the dispersion-curve-like behavior with one zero predicted by the standard LID theory with velocity-independent transport collision rates. The reason for these additional zeros of the drift velocity is the alternating-sign dependence on the lithium-atom velocity of the relative difference of transport rates of collisions between buffer particles and excited and unexcited atoms. What is also established is that the anomalous LID of lithium atoms can be observed at almost all temperatures, depending on the value of ξ. At a fixed temperature, anomalous LID can be observed only in a narrow range of values of the fraction of neon in the buffer mixture, Δξ≈0.02. The results make possible highly precise testing in the LID experiments of the interatomic potentials used in calculations of the velocity spectrum of anomalous LID.

Notizen: Abstract The sudden approximation in energy is used to derive analytic formulas that describe the anomalous light-induced drift (LID) of linear molecules absorbing radiation in the rovibrational transition nJ i −mJ f (n and m are the ground and excited vibrational states, and J α is the rotational quantum number in the vibrational state α=m, n). It is shown that for all linear molecules with moderate values B≲1 cm−1 of the rotational constant, anomalous LID can always by observed under the proper experimental conditions; temperature T, rotational quantum number J i , and type of transition (P or R). The parameter γ=B[J i (J i +1)−J f (J f +1)] ν n /2k BT (ν m −ν n ) is used to derive a condition for observing anomalous LID: γ∼1 (k B is the Boltzmann constant and ν α is the transport rate of collisions of molecules in the vibrational state α and buffer particles at moderate molecular velocities , where $$\bar \upsilon _b$$ is the most probable velocity of the buffer particles). For ν m 〉ν n anomalous LID can be observed only in P-transitions, while for ν m 〈ν n it can be observed only in R-transitions. It is shown that anomalous LID is possible for all ratios β=M b /M of the masses of the buffer particles (M b ) and of the resonant particles (M) and any absorption-line broadening (Doppler or homogeneous). The optimum conditions for observing anomalous LID are realized when the absorption line is Doppler-broadened in an atmosphere of medium-weight (β∼1) and heavy (β≫1) buffer particles. In this case, anomalous LID can be observed in the same transition within a broad temperature interval ΔT∼T. If the buffer particles are light (β≪1) or if the broadening of the absorption line is homogeneous, anomalous LID in the same transition can be observed only within a narrow temperature range ΔT≪T.

Notizen: Abstract We derive a simple analytic formula that describes the relative difference of transport collision rates, Δv/v, for collisions of molecules and atoms in the rovibrational excitation of the former by light, as a function of the rotational quantum numbers of the combining (i.e., affected by radiation) levels of the molecules. (The relative difference of transport collision rates can be measured in light-induced drift, or LID, experiments and is proportional to the LID effect.) The formula is valid in the energy sudden approximation and is based on the well-known factorization formula for cross sections of RT-transitions in linear molecules that collide with atoms. We show that in this approximation the factor Δv/v is the sum of two independent terms, the vibrational term (Δv/v)vib and the rotational term (Δv/v)rot. Each term can be measured individually in LID experiments.

Notizen: Abstract The collisional transfer of nonequilibrium in the velocity distribution of resonant particles in a laser radiation field is investigated theoretically. It is shown numerically that the transfer effect is weak. This makes it possible to use simpler approximate one-dimensional quantum kinetic equations instead of three-dimensional equations to solve spectroscopy and light-induced gas kinetics problems, where it is important to take account of the velocity dependence of the collision frequency. It is shown for anomalous light-induced drift, calculations of which are most sensitive to neglecting the transfer effect, that in a wide range of spectroscopy and light-induced gas kinetics problems the transfer of nonequilibrium can be neglected without risking the loss of important fine details of the phenomena being described.

Notizen: Abstract We examine a monochromatic absorption line in the velocity-nonselective excitation of atoms when the components of the hyperfine stricture of the electronic ground states are optically pumped. We show that the absorption lines possess unusual substructures for some values of the hyperfine splitting of the ground state (which exceed the Doppler absorption linewidth severalfold). These substructures in the absorption spectrum are most apparent if the hyperfine structure of the excited electronic state is taken into account. We calculate the absorption spectra of monochromatic light near the D 1 and D 2 lines of atomic rubidium 85,87Rb. With real hyperfine splitting taken into account, the D 1 and D 2 lines are modeled by 4-and 6-level diagrams, respectively. Finally, we show that atomic rubidium vapor can be successfully used to observe the spectral features experimentally.

Notizen: Abstract An effect of spatial orientation of molecules by a heat flux is predicted. Under typical experimental conditions the magnitude of the constant electric field arising due to static polarization of a gas of oriented molecules can reach values ∼10−4 V/cm.
