Notes: Summary The subcortical projections to the lateral geniculate body (LGB) in the rat were studied by means of discrete HRP iontophoretic deposits in the dorsal or the ventral LGB; the labelling was compared to that resulting from HRP deposits in neighboring nuclei. After injecting HRP in the dorsal LGB, labelled cells appeared bilaterally in the ventral LGB, pretectum, superior colliculus, lateral groups of the dorsal raphe nucleus and locus coeruleus. Ipsilaterally, labelled cells were found in the lateral posterior thalamus, nucleus of the posterior commissure and deep mesencephalic reticular nucleus. After injecting HRP into the ventral LGB, labelled cells were observed bilaterally in the pretectum, superior colliculus and dorsal raphe nucleus (lateral groups). Contralateral labelling appeared in the ventral LGB and parabigeminal nucleus. Ipsilateral labelling was found in the zona incerta, lateral posterior thalamus, lateral and medial mesencephalic reticular formation, vestibular and dorsal tegmental nuclei. These findings provide evidence of subcortical projections to the LGB arising in visually-related areas as well as extravisual areas, which might be related to the LGB boutons that survive complete cortical and retinal ablations.

Notes: In view of the fact that Vasopressin can induce pituitary adrenocorticotrophin release, we performed an autoradiographical study of [3H]arginine vasopressin binding in human pituitary tissue obtained post-mortem from adults and foetuses. Sites of specific, high affinity binding (IC50 3 to 5 nM) were detected as patches in the anterior lobe and at the junction between the anterior and neural lobes. The neural lobe was not labelled. Immunocytochemical studies performed on human pituitary tissue showed that [3H]arginine vasopressin only marked zones which correspond to areas rich in cells immunoreactive to adrenocorticotrophin. We conclude that in the human pituitary, corticotrophs bear vasopressin binding sites. Since non-radioactive synthetic structural analogues of vasopressin acting as V1 and V2 agonists or antagonists failed to compete for binding of radioligand in the human pituitary, while a V1-type agonist displaced [3H]arginine vasopressin binding in the rat pituitary, we postulate that binding sites in the human pituitary may differ from the previously known vasopressin receptors.

Notes: Abstract The attract and kill technique has been formulated in a product under the trade name `Sirene CM®'. It consists of a viscous paste containing 0.16% codlemone to attract the male moths and 6.0% permethrin to kill them. The formulation is applied by hand twice per season using a specially developed system which can be calibrated for application of the paste to the host plant in small droplets of either 100 μl or 50 μl. Between 1995 and 1997, 15 trials on control of the codling moth were conducted in isolated orchards in the Lake Geneva region. In each plot, depending on tree size, two applications varying between 52 and 537 g ha−1 of Sirene CM were made. In 14 trials, the larval attack of the codling moth on fruit was below the economic threshold of 1% and the hibernating population stayed at a low level. One single plot (0.4 ha) had to be treated with a curative spray in 1995, because the initial population was much too high. According to the reductions in trap catch and of mating frequency measured by tethered codling moth females, efficiency of the attract and kill droplets lasted 5–7 weeks, after which it decreased slowly.

Notes: Summary The prognostic value of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R) was prospectively assessed in a series of 229 clinical T1-T2, N0-N1 breast carcinomas diagnosed between May 1987 and October 1989. EGF-R expression was determined by measuring the specific Bmax of125I EGF to tumor plasma membrane preparations. Tumor with a B max ≥ 3 fmol/mg of protein were considered positive with regard to EGF-R expression. With a median follow-up of 34 months, the 3-year overall and disease-free survivals are respectively 92% and 88% for EGF-R ≤ 3, and 91% and 86% EGF-R 〉 3 fmol, showing no significant difference, even when comparing axillary lymph node status. We did not succeed in finding an EGF-R cut-off value which might be significant in univariate analysis. Multivariate analysis of our data indicates that pT (p = 0.001), pN (p = 0.04), and Scarff-Bloom grade (p = 0.04) are the only significant predictors of disease-free survival among the parameters investigated in this study.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Codling moth, Cydia pomonella L., males and females were exposed separately to contact with dry residues of CGA 184'699 an insect growth inhibitor (IGI) and fenoxycarb, an insect growth regulator (IGR), The sexes were then grouped together in non treated boxes for mating and egglaying. Fecundity of codling moth was little affected by this treatment but its fertility decreased with increases in the concentration of products and the duration of contact. Induced ovicidal efficacy was about 50% after three days contact with the residues of a 100 mg (a.i.)/l application of CGA 184'699, whereas the same conditions led to about 87% efficacy with fenoxycarb. With CGA 184'699, only contact by females affected egg eclosion whereas fenoxycarb acted on both sexes.
