Notes: We report the use of unshielded planar low-Tc dc SQUIDs for temperature-dependent ac and dc magnetic susceptibility measurements on small particles in magnetic fields of up to 300 G. These measurements were made with integrated microsusceptometers which can operate in such fields when applied in the plane of the device. We show paramagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and superconducting behavior on various samples of order 20–50 μm from 0.3 to 4 K and discuss the effect of sample placement on the magnitude of the signal. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR - The article on AT&T Bell Labor-atories' research (Nature 356, 184; 1992) suggesting that we are drastically cutting back on research misrepresents reality. In 1980, the Bell Laboratories' budget for research and development was $1.25 billion; in 1991, it was approximately $3.1 billion. ...

Notes: [Auszug] We used the O A cell shown in Fig. 1. There are several important changes to the cell previously used for benzene10. We have designed a special transducer with a stainless steel casing which has a flat polished inside surface against which a lead zirconate titanate (PZT) cylinder is pressed. ...

Notes: [Auszug] The two-photon absorption we study here is the B2u"-Alg transition of benzene7 which is symmetry forbidden but becomes allowed in two-photon absorption due to vibronic coupling. The B2u- Alg transitions have been extensively studied in vapour phase benzene8"14 by fluorescence monitoring. In the ...

Notes: [Auszug] Methane is a minor constituent of the atmospheres of the outer major planets1, Uranus, Neptune, Jupiter and Saturn, as well as of Titan, the largest satellite of Saturn. This is deduced from the absorption bands of CH4 which dominate the visible and near IR spectra of these planets2. The long ...

Notes: Abstract Measurements of temporal variation of stratospheric NO are important in validating its postulated role in catalytic destruction of stratospheric ozone. This paper reviews the results of NO measurements obtained from the two recent balloon-borne spin-flip Raman laser opto-acoustic spectroscopy experiments. The temporal variation of NO reported here strongly supports the role of NO in the stratospheric O3 balance. The paper compares the results obtained here with those obtained using different techniques. Also are compared the relative merits of the various techniques. Future improvements in the present technique as well as other possible experimental stratospheric studies are considered.
