Notes: Abstract In adult, lesion-impaired rat brain receiving embryonic day 15 (E15) fetal transplants, the level of expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) correlates positively with choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) levels and also with measurements of successful behavioural recovery. These results suggest that glial cells may play a pivotal role in the cognitive success of socalled cholinergic-rich transplants. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between GFAP-and ChAT-staining antigens in or around cholinergicrich fetal grafts transplanted in adult cortex. An immunohistochemical fluorescent double-labelling technique was used to simultaneously identify GFAP- and ChAT-staining cells to assess whether there was a different type or distribution of cells present in these successful transplants. On brain sections of transplant area, GFAP-staining glial cells did not co-label with ChAT-staining cells. The transplant area, therefore, did not reveal a different type of cell from those seen in comparable normal cortical brain but rather a greater concentration of both GFAP- and ChAT-positive staining cells.

Notes: Abstract The obstruction effect and activation enerqy for the self-diffusion of Co2+ ions in CoSO4 have been computed using the zone-diffusion technique in agar gel medium at five different concentrations of the electrolyte. Both parameters are found to decrease with an increase in electrolyte concentration. The decrease in obstruction effect expressed in terms of α is attributed to the competitive hydration between ions and agar molecules in a diffusion system while the decrease in activation energy is explained by considering the changes in the physical properties of the solution with concentration at microscopic level.

Notes: Abstract The diffusion of cobalt sulphate is studied in 1% agar gel over a concentration range of 10−5 to 0.2M at 25 °C. The experimental values of the diffusion coefficient at various concentrations determined by the zone-diffusion technique are compared with the theoretical values of diffusion coefficinets computed on the basis of Onsager-Fuoss theory. The observed deviations are interpreted in terms of relative contributions of diffusion-enhancing and diffusion-retarding interactions occurring in the water-gel-electrolyte system.

Notes: Abstract Lithium intercalated titanium disulphide and diselenide form a number of hydrated complexes. Two types of hydrate are found, one containing a monolayer and the other a bilayer of water molecules between the layers TiX2 (X=S, Se). By powder X-ray diffraction the crystal structures have been determined of Li(H2O)Ti(S,Se)2, Li(H2O)2Ti(S,Se)2 and refined parameters are given for the sulphur and selenium positions. The compounds Li0.4(H2O)Ti(S,Se)2 and Li0.4(H2O)2Ti(S,Se)2 are isostructural with these materials, with statistical occupation of the lithium sites.
