Notes:
Summary The fresh volume of the total brain, of the prosencephalon, of the cerebral cortex and of the prosencephalon without the cerebral cortex is studied in a sample of 31 human brains (mean age of the sample 63.5 years, 13 females, 18 males). The brains were cut by a new method. The volumes were measured by means of an electronic planimeter. 1. The mean value of the fresh volume (± standard deviation) of the female brains (1196±30 cm3) is about 140 cm3 smaller than that of the male brains (1338±27 cm3). The range of the sample is 1002–1558 cm3. 2. The mean value of the fresh volume of the prosencephalon in the female brains (1033±26 cm3) is 125 cm3 smaller than in the male brains (1158±24 cm3). The range of the sample is 867–1359 cm3. 3. The mean value of the fresh volume of the cerebral cortex in the female brains (546±14 cm3) is about 65 cm3 smaller than in the male brains (612±15 cm3). The range of the sample is 465–755 cm3. 4. The mean value of fresh volume of the prosencephalon without the cerebral cortex in the female brains (487±16 cm3) is about 60 cm3 smaller than in the male brains (546±13 cm3). The range of the sample is 361±659 cm3. 5. The mean values of the fresh volumes of the total brain and of the prosencephalon, of the cerebral cortex and of the prosencephalon without cerebral cortex are statistically significant smaller in females than in males when proved by the Wilcoxon-test and by the t-test (2 α=0.01). 6. The fresh volumes of the prosencephalon, of the cerebral cortex and of the prosencephalon without the cerebral cortex of the right hemisphere are significantly greater than those of the left hemisphere (2 α=0.01). 7. The relationship between the fresh volume of the prosencephalon, of the cerebral cortex, of the prosencephalon without cerebral cortex and the fresh volume of total brain yields a proportionality with a high positive correlation (0.87≦R≦0.99) (we expect a great volume of the part of the brain when brain has a great volume). 8. There is no difference in sex between the regression lines (proved by t-test). Both samples of female brains and of male brains could be subsumed under one common regression without significant rise in the sums of the squares of the deviations. 9. A significant correlation between the fresh volumes of the total brains, of the prosencephalon, of the cerebral cortex and of the prosencephalon without cerebral cortex and the age could not be proved in this sample.
