    Notes: Abstract Positron annihilation spectroscopy has been applied to measure the free-volume hole distribution in poly(ether urethane) as a function of temperature. The hole radius distribution determined from orthopositronium lifetime distribution is found to shift to a larger values with increasing temperature. This result, combined with the variation of ionic conductivity, suggests that carrier ions do not migrate naked but are bound to polymer segments through ion-dipole interaction forces, and the ion migration is controlled primarily by segmental motion of the polymer.

    Notes: The positron lifetime spectra and ionic conductivity have been measured for poly(ether urethane)-LiClO4 polymeric electrolyte as a function of temperature. The glass transition temperature Tg, free-volume Vf, and fractional free-volume f were derived from the positron annihilation parameters. A correlation between fractional free-volume f(T) and conductivity σ above Tg, log[σ/σ(Tg)]=C1[f(T)−f(Tg)]/f[T], was first experimentally confirmed using measured positron annihilation results. The comparison of the value of the obtained constant C1 with the universal values for the segmental diffusion of amorphous polymers indicated that the critical free volume required for the ion transport is much smaller than that required for polymer chain segment mobility. Carrier transport and the segmental motion are discussed in terms of the free-volume theory. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Fluorine-18 produced by the18O(p,n)18F reaction on18O-water has proved to be highly useful as a source for a slow positron beam. About 70 GBq of18F is produced routinely by an ultra-compact cyclotron. The18F formed in H2 18O target is sent through a fine pipe to the site of positron slowing-down, fixed on a small spot by adsorption or drying, and then placed close to the moderator foil. An automatic apparatus has been set up for the entire process including the recovery of H2 18O.

    Notes: High-Vinyl Polybutadiene (HVBD)/cis-Polyisoprene (CPI) blends were characterized by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS). A single DSC glass transition temperature Tg is observed, whose composition dependence strongly deviates from additivity, and shows an apparent cusp when the weight fraction of HVBD ≈ 0.75. The free-volume hole size, Vh, and the scaled fractional free volume, hps/C, = I3Vh were determined by PALS from the orthopositronium (o-Ps) intensities, I3, and lifetimes, τ3, over a temperature range encompassing Tg and the temperature at which “positronium bubble” formation occurs. In the glass, Vh and hps/C are smaller for CPI than for HVBD, but the thermal expansion coefficient for hole volume, αf, is larger in the melt for CPI than for HVBD; thus, an iso-hole volume temperature occurs in these blends at Tiso ≈ -34°C. Above and below Tiso, Vh and hps/C each show a negative departure from additivity. A quantitative interpretation of the cusp in the composition dependence of Tg can be obtained, via a modified analysis of Kovacs, using free-volume quantities from PALS, with the ratio of scaling constants CCPI/CHVBD as an adjustable parameter. At high temperatures, the positron bubble size is smaller in CPI than in HVBD. This agrees with the observation that the thermal expansivity of hole volume, and, hence the internal pressure are larger in the equilibrium melt of CPI. The effect of e+-irradiation on the o-Ps intensity was investigated. I3 decreases more rapidly in the melt as T → Tg, and then more slowly in the glass, suggesting that the effect is due to trapping of radical or ionic species which inhibit o-Ps formation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
