Notes:
Summary On implantation of a passive ground heat flux transducer, the temperature structure of the soil is changed, therefore the ground heat flux measured by this transducer is not equal to the flux within the undisturbed soil profile. The size of the disturbance is dependent on the transducer's geometric characteristic parameter (H) [7]. This parameter is a function of size and shape, with a further complication of variance with depth [5]. A numerical model using the Laplacian steady state heat flow equation in 2 dimensions is used to find the geometric characteristic parameter's dependence on depth. Its value for a transducer at the soil surface is equivalent to that of a transducer of twice the thickness at “depth” in the soil. Using the same model, the dependence on geometric ratio (width/thickness), is investigated and compared with results obtained by Schwerdtfeger [7]. The geometric characteristic parameter remains constant in any application in soil of any conductivity. When installed in the vicinity of the soil surface, the transducer must be calibrated to simulate the depth at which it is to be used.
