Notizen: Abstract An experiment was carried out with increasing concentrations of Cd in soil on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) plants. The Cd contents of soil and in tomato roots, leaves and fruit have been determined during the growing cycle. The effect of Cd on ethylene production has been investigated by monitoring hormone biosynthesis in whole fruit during different ripening stages. Furthermore, 1-Aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) content, ACC synthase activity in vitro and Ethylene-Forming Enzyme (EFE) activity in vivo have been studied after incubation of fruit discs at different Cd concentrations. A clear relationship existed between Cd in the soil and its concentration in the leaves. Roots showed the highest Cd concentration, whereas fruit did not accumulate the element. Ethylene evolution of whole fruit was not affected by the Cd treatment. High Cd concentration (80 ug mL−1) induced a slight increase of EFE activity in fruit discs.

Notizen: Abstract Experiments were performed concerning the influence of soil organic matter on Cd availability to wheat seedlings. Cadmium added to soil was bound by alkali soluble humic substances through linkages so strong that it was not removable by seedlings under toxic limit. Cadmium linked by organic matter was principally found in fulvic acids, and after polyamide chromatography of the latter, all fulvic Cd was completely recovered in first fraction which contained the major part of aminoacid compounds. These findings suggest that interactions between Cd and proteic substances, frequently reported in studies on animal tissues, are active in soil too.

Notizen: Abstract This paper gives the results from four-year field experiments on compost application, added at the maximum rate allowed by Italian legislation (30 t/ha/y). The purpose of the experiment was to evaluate any eventual heavy metal accumulation in soil and corn plants. Cadmium in corn plants increased particularly in the roots from 0.22 mg kg−1 to 1.31 mg kg−1, concentration of Zn and Cu increased in grains, from 26.8 to 35.8 and from 2.4 to 4.2 mg kg−1 respectively. Relevant increase in the roots was detected for Zn from 34.6 to 146.8 mg kg−1. Only in the 4th year Ni concentration increases in the root portion while the content of Pb and Cr in corn was generally unaffected by the compost application. Heavy metals in the soil determined by a sequential chemical extraction, indicated that extractability changed with time. A certain increase was found from the beginning to the end of the experiment particularly for Zn, from 23.3 mg kg−1 to 45.1 mg kg−1 in extractable forms. Nevertheless the extractable amounts are rather small in respect to the total heavy metal content of compost.

Notizen: Summary Total porosity and pore-size distribution (p.s.d.) were determined in soil aggregates taken in plots planted with maize and treated with farmyard manure and three rates of compost. Soil aggregates were collected from the soil adherent to the maize roots (root soil aggregates) and from bulk soil (bulk soil aggregates). Mercury intrusion porosimetry was used to evaluate the total porosity and the p.s.d. Treatments did not affect the total porosity of the bulk soil aggregates. The same was observed for the root soil aggregates. However the total porosity of the root soil aggregates was always lower than that of the bulk soil aggregates. The loss of total porosity was found to be due to a decrease in the percentage of larger pores with respect to the total.

Notizen: Abstract The effect of different percentages of two fly ashes, derived from the combustion of coals from Poland (PO) and South Africa (SA), on organic N mineralization and nitrification in two different soils, was investigated. Following the addition of 2, 5, and 10% (w/w) PO and SA, the N mineralization constant K 1 decreased in the soil low in organic matter content. The addition of the same percentages of the two fly ashes to the soil higher in organic matter content gave contrasting results. When nitrification was taken into account, the nitrification constant K2 increased, following the addition of 2, 5, and 10% (w/w) PO and SA to the two soils. The most noticeable exception was the addition of 10% SA to the soil low in organic matter content, where K 2 decreased.

Notizen: Abstract Soil organic matter influence on Langmuir isotherms for Cu and Cd in four Italian soils of different pedogenetic origin was investigated. Adsorption processes were carried out either on the whole soils or on soils after destruction of organic matter. Organic matter removal produced a noteworthy decrease of Cu adsorption contrasted by a smaller decrease or even a slight increase of Cd adsorption. Addition of increasing amounts of Cu on soil previously enriched with Cd did not significantly change the Cu adsorption while a rather different pattern was observed when increasing quantities of Cd were adsorbed on the same soil after Cu enrichment. In this case Cu already present in the soil reduced the amount of Cd adsorbed. These findings suggest that the differences found in the adsorption process of such metals primarily depend on the different chelating effectiveness of soil organic matter in the respect to Cu and Cd.

Notizen: Abstract A bioassay technique was used to investigate heavy metals uptake by wheat seedlings grown in fly ash-amended soils. No negative effect of fly ash on the growth of wheat seedlings was found. The addition of the fly ash generally decreased the heavy metal concentration in the wheat seedlings. The total accumulation largely depended on the soil characteristics. The variation in the soil pH induced by the fly ash treatment could be considered the most important parameter that influenced heavy metals uptake. In the soil with a higher increase of pH (2 units) total accumulation of heavy metals decreased with increasing fly ash addition. In the other soils where the pH variation was lower (0.4 units), total accumulation of some heavy metals increased. These obtained data provide useful information which is required before the agronomic use of fly ash can be recommended in Italian soils.
