Notes:
When selected ion monitoring is performed near the detection limit of the mass spectrometer, the signal processing devices normally used give poor reproducibility. After a careful study of the nature of the signal in such conditions, the number of ions detected during the elution of the gas chromatographic peak appears to be the parameter of interest. Processing the signal by an ion counting chain gives an improvement both in the repeatability and the signal-to-noise ratio. This system also allows an enhancement of the sensitivity of the detection. Linear calibration curves are obtained in cases where the signals from the signal processing normally employed are not usable. Calculation of an accurate detection limit and of the interval of confidence necessitate some new mathematical developments.
