    Notes: This paper is concerned with the behaviour of granular media containing voids penetrated by a mixture of viscous liquid and gas (air). It is assumed that, for such materials, the skeleton may be considered as rate-independent and the sensitivity to the applied loading rate may be attributed to the viscosity of the liquid filling the void space. Within the context of geomechanics, such assumptions appear to be relevant to all coarse-grained cohesionless materials, including saturated sands. A mathematical formulation for the description of undrained response is presented. The macroscopic properties are estimated based on volume averaging, which is applied to both stress and strain measures within the heterogeneous constituent medium. Numerical examples are provided illustrating the influence of the viscosity of the liquid on the liquefaction potential of a loose granular assembly.

    Notes: A mathematical framework for the description of localized deformation, as outlined in Reference 14, is reviewed. The formulation is derived by estimating the average mechanical properties of a medium intercepted by a shear band. The mechanical response of the homogenized system depends on the properties of the constituents and the respective volume fractions, it remains invariant however with respect to the thickness of the shear band. The implementation of the framework in the context of finite element analysis is discussed. Numerical examples, pertaining to some geotechnical problems, are provided.

    Notes: In this paper a simple continuum theory, as recently proposed by Pietruszczak (Int. J. Computers Struct., 58, 1093-1099 (1996)), is applied to describe the mechanical effects of the alkali-aggregate reaction in concrete structures. The formation of alkali- silica gel leads to a progressive expansion of the material. The progress in the reaction is assumed to be coupled with the degradation of mechanical properties, the latter described within the framework of elastoplasticity. The paper discusses the details of the numerical implementation of the constitutive model, including an implicit integration scheme and the computation of an updated tangent operator. Numerical examples are provided to assess the performance of the proposed algorithm. The formulation is then used to analyse the junction between the right-wing dam and the water intake structure of the Beauharnois powerhouse situated in Quebec (Canada). A non-linear 3D finite element analysis is performed simulating the time history of the deformation due to continuing reaction.

    Notes: In this paper, liquefaction potential of loose sand deposit subjected to an earthquake loading is evaluated. The analysis is performed by using a finite element technique incorporating the equations of dynamics of saturated porous elastoplastic media. The soil response is modelled by an anisotropic hardening rule, similar to that as proposed by Poorooshasb and Pietruszczak.1 The concept is based on the theory of bounding surface plasticity incorporating a non-associated flow rule and the idea of reflected plastic potential. The present paper provides a modified formulation to that discussed in Reference 1. Modifications are aimed at simplifying the concept for numerical implementations.

    Notes: Terzaghi's ‘effective stress’ principle, though originally developed for soils, has been extensively applied to water saturated cemented materials (such as concrete, rocks, masonry units, etc.). There are, however, serious reservations regarding its validity for this class of materials. In this paper an alternative stress decomposition is proposed. It is based on average stress measures in constitutents, i.e. the solid matrix and water. Constitutive relations governing the undrained response of a cemented aggregate mixture, treated as a brittle-plastic material, are derived. The framework is illustrated by some numerical examples pertaining to the behaviour of saturated concrete.

    Notes: This paper presents plasticity formulation of the multi-laminate framework of soil models. Soil element is assumed to be an assemblage of perfectly fitting polyhedral blocks and irreversible deformations are assumed to occur due to sliding, separation/closing of the boundaries. Using an appropriate summation of mechanisms, the total plastic strains are obtained by evaluating contributions from an infinite number of randomly oriented planes in space. The paper provides a general plasticity formulation and examines various constitutive theories which can be incorporated into the framework.

    Notes: An elastoplastic constitutive model for concrete subjected to cyclic loading conditions is presented. The model is an extension of a recently proposed constitutive concept.7 An initial active loading process is described, using the conventional framework of the rate independent theory of plasticity. An appropriate hardening/softening parameter is introduced which allows one to model the sensitivity of material characteristics to varying confining pressure, including a smooth transition from stable to unstable response. For stress histories that include stress reversals, the formulation invokes a set of neutral loading loci defining the conditions of the neutral state.8 The field of hardening moduli is specified through an appropriate interpolation rule which enables one to simulate adequately the effect of cyclic degradation of the material. The performance of the model is verified for some typical cyclic loading histories, and the results are compared with existing experimental data.

    Notes: Results of experimental investigation and numerical simulations of the mechanical response of the saturated cemented materials are reported. Saturated as well as dry samples cored from commercially available fire bricks are used. The samples were tested in a triaxial rock cell at different initial confining pressures. The tests have been simulated using the constitutive framework proposed in Part I of this paper. The results both experimental and numerical, provide the evidence in support of the proposed stress decomposition, thereby questioning the validity of Terzaghi's principle for the considered class of materials.
