Summary Ten Rh-negative probands were injected with 1 ml fetal,51Cr-labelled, Rh-positive, ABO-incompatible erythrocytes.51Cr-activity of liver, lung, spleen, and bone marrow as well as in whole blood and in serum was then measured repreatedly for up to 54 hours. Fetal cells were also counted in blood smears using theKleihauer-Betke-technique. Our experiments show that-in accordance with results of other investigators-erythrocytes are hemolysed in the circulation within a few minutes. After hemolysis, the total51Cr-activity of whole blood is found in the serum. The comparatively higher51Cr-activity measured over the liver must be explained by deposition of51CrCl3-protein-complexes in this organ. There is no indication for a participation of the liver in the hemolysis of the ABO incompatible erythrocytes.
