Notes: Quality assurance in process development. Important decisions pertaining to quality assurance in the chemical industry are already made during process development for new products and improvement of existing processes. This article describes new methods for achieving quality assurance in various phases of process development, both for the process itself and for the desired products. Examples from process engineering with fluids and solids serve to demonstrate the contributions of process engineers to the development of stable and robust processes with regard to quality assurance.

Notes: Particle Measurement, State of the Art, Trends - Needs. An excellent overview of the various goals of particle technology, which have long extended far beyond particle size analysis, is provided by POWTECH. The following examples should serve to illustrate the scope of such measurements and the trends noted in this area: measurements for the monitoring of clean rooms; measurements supporting process engineering developments; and process analysis. There is wide range of instrumentation available for the assessment of dispersed product states. Based on proven principles these instruments are becoming more user friendly and available with improved data evaluation; the methods of evaluation are, unfortunately, still not clear to the user. The current trend is in two directions: (1) simultaneous acquisition of several measurements for more accurate determination of the required quantity or for determination of two different quantities and (2) on-line or in-line measurement, which has to be fast, economical, and safe.

Notes: Product quality is influenced by the properties of feedstocks and by production parameters. In contrast to gases and liquids, the quality of solids is also affected by the particle properties, such as size, specific surface area, structure and shape. These are the properties which are primarily changed in solids process engineering. The accuracy and cost of possible methods for the measurement of the particle properties of feedstocks, intermediates and end products are discussed. Examples of the methods discussed are laser diffraction spectrometry, quantitative image analysis and photon correlation spectroscopy. The measuring techniques required for monitoring production processes in solids process engineering are illustrated by simple examples. In the field of process control in particular, there is still room for improvement, since there is a lack of suitable sensors and models. Process monitoring is necessary in order to ensure that product quality meets requirements which are constantly increasing.

Notes: Describing the disperse state is important for quality assurance, operational safety and the design and modelling of processes, especially in solids technology. Starting materials, intermediates and end products have to be characterized. Apart from representative sampling, preparation greatly influences the results of particle characterization. Very fine particles are normally agglomerated unless a highly dispersed state is stabilized by an additive. For a meaningful measurement, they must be preserved in this state or be definitely dispersed, depending on the type of problem. If the point of interest is the present disperse state with regard to the processing characteristics, e.g. for a filtration, the system should not be changed by the preparation method. If it is necessary to determine the property functions, i. e. the functional relationship between technological and physical properties, it is necessary in general to use a high dispersion energy or a long dispersing time in order to obtain the best achievable dispersion. The finer and more unstable a disperse phase is, the more the correct processing is important for the result. The problems of dispersion in gases and liquids are discussed with some examples.

Notes: Over the past few years, laser diffraction spectrometry has become a very important method of particle size analysis. Typical features include the large measuring range, the simplicity of operation and the speed with which analyses can be carried out. The principle of measurement and the set-up of three commerical instruments are described. The following points are discussed, with reference to examples:-Relevant parameters, such as particle shape, shape of distribution curve or dispersion, bution curve or dispersion,-reproducibility, comparison of the results obtained with different types of apparatus between one another and with other, analytical methods, and-on-line use of the instruments for the measurement of dynamic processes, eg. flocculation and dispersion processes.Operating experience gained with six instruments over a number of years is discussed. The measuring method which is described here is in a stage of rapid development and dissemination. It is for this reason that recent improvements and new developments cannot be dealt with here. For example, an apparatus named Helos from Sympatec GmbH, Remlingen, has appeared on the market. The external appearance of the instruments marketed by the Malvern and Leeds and Northrup companies has changed somewhat. The author's practical experience (in some instances extremely wide-ranging) with these devices is presented here in summary form.

Notes: A knowledge of the effects of the physical parameters of solids on the product quality - the property function - is necessary for selective optimisation, to determine the cause of discrepancies and to permit corrections to be made as early as possible in a process. Property functions apply not only to the end products but to every stage of the process. The particle properties of the end product affect the quality, for example the colour strength, while those of the intermediates influence processing properties, for example the filtration resistance and subsequent process stages such as washing and granulation. In order that the property functions can be determined, the properties, performance characteristics as well as physical characteristics, must be quantifiable. Particle measuring technology was initially restricted to the measurement of physical characteristics but is increasingly becoming concerned also with performance characteristics such as the flow behavior of bulk solids and their abrasion resistance. The remaining performance characteristics can either be estimated, quantified or merely treated qualitatively.

Notes: To produce disperse products, the characterization of the disperse state and a knowledge of the property function are essential. Property functions are applied not only to characterize the quality of an end product, but also to determine the influence of different processing steps on its state. Hence it is necessary to know the property and process functions for quality assurance of the products and for safety of the processes.Good laboratory particle measuring technologies are available for investigating property and process functions. On the basis of these functions, process control takes place. On-line or, better, in-line measuring techniques are necessary to enable the accompanying process information to be obtained.
