Notes: Abstract This article reports the results of experiments aimed at producing hypothetical long-lived superheavy elements located near the spherical-shell closures with Z≥114 and N≥72. For the synthesis of superheavy nuclei, we used a combination of neutron-rich reaction partners, with a 244Pu target and a 48Ca projectile. The sensitivity of the present experiment exceeded by more than two orders of magnitude previous attempts at synthesizing superheavy nuclides in reactions of 48Ca projectiles with actinide targets. We observed new decay sequences of genetically linked alpha decays terminated by spontaneous fission. The high measured alpha-particle energies, together with the long decay times and spontaneous fission terminating the chains, offer evidence for the decay of nuclei with high atomic numbers. The decay properties of the synthesized nuclei are consistent with the consecutive alpha decays originating from the parent nuclides 288,289114, produced in the 3n-and 4n-evaporation channels with cross sections of about a picobarn. The present observations can be considered experimental evidence for the existence of the “island of stability” of superheavy elements and are discussed in terms of modern theoretical approaches.

Notes: The P–T paths for metamorphic complexes from the Precambrian shields and fold belts of different ages may result from advection, i.e. one-cycle convective processes in the lithosphere. This conclusion has been exemplified by the metamorphic evolution of several well-known complexes, for which an advective model can be successfully applied. Numerical simulations of the above processes in terms of Newtonian rheology by using a two-dimensional finite element program have been conducted. Two representative models for intracontinental gravitational ordering initiated presumably by mantle activity are considered: (i) a thermally activated multi-layered rhythmic sequence and (ii) huge rising diapiars causing circulation, in which crustal lithologies underwent high-P metamorphism (above 10–15 kbar) and subsequent ascent toward the Earth's surface.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The life of coatings by the criterion of fatigue limit is determined by the technology, the materials, parameters and structure of sprayed-on coatings, by adhesive bonds. 2. Important parameters affecting the fatigue characteristics are the sequence and kind of sprayed-on powders, the existence and the thickness of the sublayer, the total thick ness of the sprayed-on layer, preliminary heating of the substrate (increases adhesion), residual stresses arising during treatment (with increasing thickness of the coating the residual tensile stresses increase). 3. The use of powder PN85Yu15 as sublayer and of power PR-N65Kh25S3R3 as upper layer, with the total thickness of the coating equal to 0.15 mm, increases the fatigue limit of spra coated specimens by 30% in comparison with the same specimens but with the material in the initial state.

Notes: Abstract A relation is proposed to analytically describe the stress distribution in a specimen with a central hole. The Kirsch formula follows from the relation as a special case corresponding to the solution for a specimen of infinite width. Theoretical curves are presented to show the change in the stress concentration factor as a function of the ratio of the diameter of the hole to the width of the specimen, as well as of the distance from the test points of the specimen to the edge of the hole. The calculation agrees with results of experimental studies of the stress concentration factor published in the literature. Values of the error of the calculation of local stresses are also presented.

Notes: Abstract The problem of the numerical determination of residual stresses in an elastoplastic nonlinearly hardening pipe of V95ochT2 material in plane strain is examined. It is shown that due to secondary plastic deformations that develop during unloading, the greatest residual circumferential stresses reside at a certain distance from the inner surface of a thick-wall pipe. Removal of the internal layer of the pipe gives rise to a small change in the circumferential compressive stresses on its inner surface. In this case, the zone where the maximum residual circumferential compressive stresses reside is shifted deeper into the pipe with a simultaneous decrease in the distance from this zone to the new inner surface of the piper, which is formed after removal of a layer of metal.

Notes: Abstract Binaural interactions was evaluated in guinea pigs by plotting the difference between the algebraic sum of brainstem evoked potentials recorded during monaural stimulation of the right and left ears and those produced by binaural stimuli. This plot was distinguished by three peaks (N1, P1, and N2) in the region of IV–IV′ wave latencies (short-latency acoustic evoked potentials) in the absence of masking noise, but using masking noise (signal-noise ratio: +20-0 dB), plots showed additional peaks No and Po in the region of wave III–III′ latencies. The amplitude of P1N2 in relation to that of wave IV of the summated potentials recording monaural stimulation of the right and left ear remains constant with an increase in the sound pressure level from 47 to 107 dB. This relationship grows with a decline in the signal-noise ratio when masking is used, while the P1N2 amplitude declines. It is postulated that binaural interaction pattern does not change when the clicking sound increases in intensity and that distinctive aspects of neurophysiological mechanisms underlying binaural interaction emerge during masking with a signal-noise ratio of +20-0 dB.

Notes: Abstract Exposure to a pulsed electric current during reparative regeneration of bone in rabbits resulted in stimulation of osteogenesis so that it predominated over fibro- and chondrogenesis to a greater degree than inthe control. The degree of mineralization of the microstructures was indistinguishable from the control.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The possibility and expediency of using short piles driven into the upper bearing layer of a weak stratified base for constructing PSFs of apartment and industrial buildings under complex geological conditions were substantiated. 2. A method was proposed for calculating the final settlements of PSFs on short piles based on solving the mixed elastoplastic problem. 3. The economic effect from introducing the results of the investigations in housing construction of just one city with a population of 200,000 amounts to about 400,000 rubles.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The wear resistance of layers deposited by laser beam with the use of industrial powder materials based on nickel (PN73Kh16S3R3) and iron (PGFBKh-6-2) and their different composites with and without lubricants is 2.5–5 times greater than the wear resistance of steel 45. 2. The fatigue limit of steel 45 with deposited layers of powder materials is practically equal to the fatigue limit of the initial material; in contact strength these layers are practically not inferior to steel 45 in a broad range of loads. 3. The obtained results made it possible to work out a number of technologies for treating machine parts that were introduced in repair establishments.
