Abstract Fracture statistics on transmission pipelines is presented. Fractures of large-diameter pipelines are regarded as catastrophes. Fracture accidents of other pipes are less dangerous. Hydrogen makes outer layers of pipes brittle. Therefore, critical crack lengths for pipes have been calculated by a linear fracture mechanics technique. It was found that a crack of any length may be critical. The opposite opinion on reliable operation of large-diameter pipes (diameter 1420 mm) is discussed.
