Notes: Abstract The mixed convection boundary layer flow on a horizontal stationary or moving plate to a power-law non-Newtonian fluid is analyzed. An exact similarity solution is given for the case of a wall temperature that is inversely proportional to the power-law of the distance from the leading edge of the plate. It is shown that such a solution does not exist if the boundary parameter is smaller than a certain critical value. The effects of the flow index, buoyancy parameter and modified Prandtl number on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as on the global heat transfer and displacement thickness are discussed.

Notes: Abstract An analysis is presented for the heat transfer characteristics of a steady, laminar, mixed convective flow of power-law type non-Newtonian fluid over a circular pin by the conjugate convection-conduction theory including radiative effects under optically thick limit approximation. Numerical results are presented for the dimensionless heat transfer coefficients, local and overall heat fluxes and temperature distribution of the pin by a simultaneous solution of the convective boundary layer equations of the fluid and the energy equation of the pin.

Notes: Abstract The boundary layer in free convection above a uniformly heated semi-infinite flat plate, which is inclined at a small angle to the horizontal in porous media is discussed. For positive inclinations of the plate, series solutions, one valid near the leading edge and the other at large distances from it, are obtained. When the inclination is negative, a series solution valid near the leading edge is again obtained. A step-by-step numerical technique, based on a scheme by Keller, is used to complete the solution in the region where neither series is adequate. For the negative inclinations of the plate, the boundary layer separates and a region of reverse flow develops.

Notes: Summary The magnetic response of granular superconducting YBCO samples with different grain sizes is reported. The analysis is carried out by measuring the low-frequency a.c. magnetic susceptibility as a function of the temperature with an applied magnetic field of amplitude ranging between 0.4 and 800 A/m. The observed magnetic behaviour is interpreted in terms of grain size and weak-links properties. The experimental results evidence the influence of the sample microstructure on the magnetic susceptibility. The intergranular and intragranular onset temperatures are compared with the critical temperature of the samples obtained by means of electrical-resistivity measurements. The temperature dependence of the intergranular critical current density is derived from the susceptibility data.

Notes: An analysis of steady laminar mixed convection boundary layer flow along a vertical cone of constant wall temperature is presented. A mixed convection parameter ?, as proposed by Lin and Chen, is used to serve as a controlling parameter that determines the relative importance of the forced and the free convection flows. New coordinates and dependent variables are then defined in terms of ?, so that the transformed non-similar boundary layer equations give computationally efficient numerical solutions which are valid over the entire range of mixed convection flow from the forced convection limit to the free convection limit for fluids of any Prandtl number. The effects of the mixed convection parameter ? and the Prandtl number Pr on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as on the skin friction and heat transfer coefficients are shown for both cases of buoyancy assisting and buoyancy opposing flow conditions.

Notes: Purpose - To study the steady mixed convection boundary-layer flow of a micropolar fluid near the region of the stagnation point on a double-infinite vertical flat plate is studied. The results of this paper are important for the researchers in the area of micropolar fluids. Design/methodology/approach - For the case considered the problem reduces to a system of ordinary differential equations, which is solved numerically using the Keller-box method. This method is very efficient for solving boundary-layer problems and it can easily be applied to other general situations than that presented in this paper. Any PhD student can learn and apply it very easily. Findings - Representative results for the velocity, microrotation and temperature profiles, as well as for the reduced skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number have been obtained for the case of strong concentration, Prandtl number of 0.7, some values of the material parameter K and the mixed convection parameter ?(=0). Both assisting and opposing flow cases are considered. Results for the reduced skin friction coefficient and reduced local Nusselt number as well as for the reduced velocity, temperature and microrotation profiles are given in tables and figures. The obtained results are compared with ones from the open literature and it is found that they are in excellent agreement. The important conclusion is, we have been able to show that for opposing flow solutions are possible are possible only for a limited range of values of the mixed convection parameter ?. Research limitations/implications - The results of this paper are valid only in the small region around the stagnation point on a vertical surface and they are not applicable outside this region. Practical implications - The theory of micropolar fluids and also the results of the present paper can be used to explain the characteristics in certain fluids such as exotic lubricants, colloidal suspensions or polymeric fluids, liquid crystals, and animal blood. Originality/value - The paper is very well prepared, presented and readable. We believe that the results are original and important from both theoretical and application point of views.
