    Notes: Abstract. Besides the classical forms of acute and chronic bronchiolitis, different special forms, such as obliterative, respiratory, and follicular bronchiolitis are recognized. In addition, even new entities emerge, such as Sauropus-induced bronchiolitis. Despite this progress in pathology, pulmonologists still prefer the diagnostic term 'small airways disease', instead of the more specific and even etiology-directed diagnoses provided by the morphologic examination. In this overview, an updated classification will be presented, which includes all forms of bronchiolitis described so far. This classification is structured along morphologic features of bronchiolitis. Different forms of acute and chronic bronchiolitis are described, so that a given reaction pattern can be associated with specific causes, such as eosinophilic bronchiolitis in asthma, or necrotizing bronchiolitis in viral infection. However, there exist more than just one morphologic reaction for a given etiologic agent, resulting in an overlap of morphologic appearances for a given disease.

    Notes: Abstract Wilson-Mikity syndrome (WMS), an uncommon cause of respiratory distress presenting after birth, is radiologically characterised by varying degrees of interstitial thickening and bilateral cyst-like foci of hyperinflation. Aetiology and pathogenesis are still unknown. There are few reports of WMS in the paediatric literature and none describing the features and value of high-resolution CT. The purpose of this report is to describe the radiographic findings and high-resolution CT appearance of WMS and to correlate them with the histopathological findings.

    Notes: Abstract High-resolution CT (HRCT) is the most sensitive radiographic method to image small airways disease. We discuss the HRCT features of follicular bronchiolitis in a 5-year-old boy and correlate them with the histopathological findings. The changes described include centrilobular nodules, bronchiectasis and bronchiolectasis, branching opacities and areas of reduced lung attenuation.

    Notes: Abstract Bovine serum albumin (BSA) in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) was injected into the knee joints of previously BSA-sensitized guinea pigs and rabbits. The primary immune reaction to BSA prevented secondary immune response toTrichinella larvae infection. We were unable to produce either eosinophilia in the peripheral blood or antibodies againstTrichinella antigen (shown by complement fixation test). The additional injection of mediators of the inflammatory reaction or their precursors, e.g., complement component C5 and arachidonic acid, caused different histological pictures. C5 produced a prolonged acute inflammatory phase with abundant neutrophils, whereas arachidonic acid did not significantly change the inflammatory response as compared to controls. The additional application of eosinophil-enriched preparation (EEP) caused a conspicuously reduced influx of monocytes/macrophages, a reduction of lymphocyte numbers, a prolonged influx of neutrophils, increased arylsulfatase activity, earlier reduction of the inflammatory process, and earlier onset of synoviocyte regeneration as compared to controls.
