    Notes: Abstract We measured growth of larval Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus in terms of mass, volume, and weight in water as well as the mass-specific activities of the metabolic enzymes citrate synthase, lactate dehydrogenase, and malate dehydrogenase. Weight in water, the force the fish must exert to maintain vertical position, increases by a factor of 18 in larvae growing from 10 to 15 mm. The weight increase coincides with the development of the larval swim bladder. The activities of all three enzymes per unit mass of fish tissue decline greatly over this time period, indicating that the fish does not further develop its aerobic and anaerobic metabolic capacity for swimming during this growth interval.

    Notes: Abstract The turning behavior of elvers of the American eel Anguilla rostrata was studied in an arena in which a horizontal electric or a vertical magnetic field could be manipulated. The objectives were to determine if the strength and polarity of a weak direct-current (dc) electric field influenced elver orientation, and to determine if any such influence was due to electric fields generated by the elvers' own swimming movements. As electric current density increased from 10-2 μA cm-2 to 102 μA cm-2, elvers turned increasingly more toward the anode, regardless of whether the anode was on the left or right side of the arena. Elvers in the lowest field turned more toward the cathode than control elvers, and elvers in the highest field turned more toward the anode than controls. There were no differences in mean turning angles of groups of elvers swimming in four different vertical magnetic field conditions (0.54 gauss, 〈0.02 gauss, 0.52 gauss reversed direction, and 2.00 gauss), suggesting that elvers were not influenced by internally generated electric fields. However, swimming speeds were such that the generated fields would have been of the order of 10-4 μA cm-2 or less. Elver orientation apparently could be influenced by electric fields of the magnitude generated in major ocean current systems, but probably are not influenced by electric fields generated by their own swimming in the geomagnetic field.

    Notes: Abstract A microbalance is used to weigh animals while they are immersed in water held at constant temperature. Paired weighings of the same individual, done in waters of identical osmolality but differing in density, permit the use of Archimedes' principle to compute animal mass and volume. Body density and weight in water can be computed from these quantities. These measurements can be used directly for developmental and morphological studies, and as points of reference in ecological or physiological studies.

    Notes: Abstract Optical Second-Harmonic Generation (SHG) from semiconductor interfaces has been widely studied, but it is only recently, with the advent of commercial, tuneable, pulsed laser sources that the spectroscopic aspect of SHG has begun to be more widely exploited. Here, results from porous Si and Si(100)-Sb are reported, which illustrate the potential of spectroscopic SHG as a probe of semiconductor interfaces.

    Notes: Abstract  The three-dimensional P-wave velocity structure of Mount Spurr is determined to depths of 10 km by tomographic inversion of 3,754 first-arriving P-wave times from local earthquakes recorded by a permanent network of 11 seismographs. Results show a prominent low-velocity zone extending from the surface to 3–4 km below sea level beneath the southeastern flank of Crater Peak, spatially coincident with a geothermal system. P-wave velocities in this low-velocity zone are approximately 20% slower than those in the shallow crystalline basement rocks. Beneath Crater Peak an approximately 3-km-wide zone of relative low velocities correlates with a near-vertical band of seismicity, suggestive of a magmatic conduit. No large low-velocity zone indicative of a magma chamber occurs within the upper 10 km of the crust. These observations are consistent with petrologic and geochemical studies suggesting that Crater Peak magmas originate in the lower crust or upper mantle and have a short residence time in the shallow crust. Earthquakes relocated using the three-dimensional velocity structure correlate well with surface geology and other geophysical observations; thus, they provide additional constraints on the kinematics of the Mount Spurr magmatic system.

    Notes: The research examines the effect of priming negative stereotypic and positive counter-stereotypic portrayals of African Americans (Study 1) and women (Study 2) on interpretations of actual media events. A counter-stereotypic portrayal of an African American male led participants to subsequently make more external or situational attributions of responsibility to other African American males involved in unrelated media events (i.e., Rodney King and Magic Johnson), whereas stereotypic portrayals led to more internal or personal attributions. Similarly, a counter-stereotypic portrayal of a female tended to increase the perceived credibility of females involved in unrelated media events (i.e., the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas hearings and the William Kennedy Smith/Patricia Bowman rape trial) whereas stereotypic portrayals decreased their perceived credibility. Study 2 also revealed an ingroup-outgroup bias in the interpretation of media events, with females tending to be more sympathetic toward other females. Implications of these findings are discussed and suggestions made for future research.

    Notes: Two hexaploid somatic hybrids [Sh; L. esculentum (+) L. Peruvianum] accessions 6 and 18 were back-crossed with two diploid L. Esculentum cultivars ‘Moneymaker’ (mm) and ‘pusa Ruby’ (pr). Twenty-two plants of the bc2 generation were produced by backcrossing 7 bcl plants (mm x sh, 6, 18) with five tomato cultivars. Fourteen of the bc2 plants were self-fertile, five produced anther cones with anthocyanin pigmentation not present in the parents. A bc3 generation was developed by crossing the four cultivars as female parent with three bc2 generation plants. The bc3 progeny derived from one pollen parent plant were produced without the need to culture immature seeds. They segregated with respect to pigmented anther cones and were self-fertile. The anther cone pigmentation of the pollen parent plant was associated with increased seed set, greater fruit size and an orange-red fruit colour. These features were transmitted to the fertile bc3 generation. Conversely, bc3 offspring involving the other two parent plants were only recovered by culture of immature seeds. The recovery of diploid plants in BCl and self-fertility in BC2 resulted in almost total recovery of the tomato cultivar characteristics (fruit size, colour and number of seeds) by BC3.

    Notes: We report on the characterization of the 3.9 MeV electron beam from a rf photoinjector at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator. This beam is used to diagnose wakefields produced by the 15 MeV beam from a second rf photoinjector. We measured the emittance with the usual quadrupole scan method but used a fitting algorithm that includes space-charge forces. This photocathode gun has produced a beam charge per pulse ranging from 10 pC to 4 nC, but is normally operated at 100 pC with a measured normalized emittance of 3.4 π mm mrad and bunch length of 8 ps full width at half maximum. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new method of parallel thermal wave imaging is demonstrated in which the thermal wave image of a heated sample is converted into an optical phase image which is sensitively probed by a Twyman–Green interferometer. The sample is mounted onto an assembly of optical layers which acts as a temperature sensitive mirror. Heat conduction from the sample to this mirror results in a two-dimensional distribution of optical phase which is probed broadfield by the interferometer. The resulting transmission thermal wave image has characteristics analogous to those of photopyroelectric images. The interferogram produced in the interferometer may be recorded by videography, although rapid frame processing methods will be required for the full advantages of the method to be realized. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
