Notes: Abstract Centerline Hα filtergrams providing nearly full day coverage of the Sun are used to study the lifetimes of enhanced network features near active regions. In the two cases studied the fraction remaining of those features present at an original epoch remains near unity for 50 h, then drops exponentially with a 1/e decay time of 30 h. Histories of representative enhanced network features are discussed.

Notes: Abstract High resolution Hα filtergrams from Big Bear Solar Observatory reveal that some filamentary features in active regions have fine structure and hence magnetic field transverse to the gross structure and the zero longitudinal field line. These features are distinct from the usual active region filament, in which fine structure, magnetic field and filament are all parallel to the zero longitudinal field line. The latter occur on boundaries between regions of weaker fields while the former occur at boundaries between regions of stronger field.

Notes: Abstract Flares often begin near lines of zero-longitudinal magnetic field. These boundary lines between opposite polarities can have the magnetic field either parallel to or transverse to the boundary. A study of 75 flares associated with one or the other type of boundary indicates that the difference in boundary morphology is not reflected in the frequency or properties of the associated flares.

Notes: Abstract The history of a series of active regions is traced for the first half of 1969. At least four active regions successively occupied positions near Carrington longitude 270. In some cases the emergence of new regions in the midst of old regions was observed. All the larger flares observed in the studied region were associated with inverted polarity. In some cases the fields emerged inverted; in other cases the inverted polarity appeared to result from the interaction of emerging flux with fields already present at the surface.
