    Notes: The influence of metal precursor and solvent composition on the morphology of SiO2, Bi2O3, and other oxide particles made by flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) was investigated. Silica precursors with boiling points Tbp=299–548 K dissolved in xylene were used as well as different solvents (Tbp=308–557 K) with tetraethyl-orthosilicate (TEOS) as the silica precursor. For Bi2O3, nonvolatile bismuth nitrate pentahydrate was dissolved in solvents with Tbp=338–468 K. Product powders were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. From these data as well as from the literature of FSP synthesis of Bi2O3, CeO2, MgO, ZnO, Fe2O3, Y2O3, Al2O3, and Mg–Al spinel, it is inferred that hollow/inhomogeneous particles are formed at low combustion enthalpy densities and when the solvent boiling point is comparable or smaller than the precursor melting or decomposition point.

    Notes: Abstract The hydrothermal stability of microporous (0.6 nm) silica membranes prepared by the sol-gel process was studied at 600 and 800 °C in a 50 mol% steam atmosphere. The membranes remained microporous after calcination and hydrothermal treatment at 600 °C for 30 h but a substantial reduction in the specific surface area (48%) accompanied by a 77% decline in the micropore volume was observed. Hydrothermal treatment at 800 °C for 30 h resulted in complete densification of the membranes. The effect of alumina and magnesia on the hydrothermal stability of the membranes was investigated. Both Al2O3 and MgO were introduced into the membranes by doping the starting silica sol with controlled amounts of the corresponding nitrate salts. Alumina did not change the pore structure of the silica membranes which retained a large part of their microporosity after hydrothermal treatment at 600 °C compared to pure silica membranes. Doping with magnesia, however, resulted in lower specific surface areas relative to those of pure and alumina-doped silica membranes after drying and calcination. These effects on the stability of the membranes are explained by assuming structural changes in the membranes catalysed by magnesia.

    Notes: The stability characteristics of an aerosol reactor in a continuous stirred tank configuration have been investigated theoretically. Three dimensionless parameters, the surface tension group ∑, reaction rate group R, and residence time group θc, suffice to determine the dynamic behavior of this system. The stability of the unique steady state was investigated using linear analysis. Numerical integration of the full nonlinear equations shows that the dynamic behavior was in accord with the predictions of the linear stability theory. The system exhibits limit-cycle behavior in the unstable part of the parameter space. In the unstable region, a simple linear relation was found between the period of the numerically computed solutions and the bifurcation parameter, θc. The results of this study are in qualitative agreement with the experimental results of Badger and Dryden (1939).
