Notes: Abstract Measurements of metabolic rate within a flow-through system generally begin only after the difference between input and output concentration has become constant. This limits the use of such a system to objects with high metabolic rates. The processes in the flow-through system were described mathematically and the differential equations obtained are analytically resolved for different situations. They can be used for the calculation of metabolic rates for any time after the onset of measurements. The flexibility of a flow-through system and its suitability for physiological and ecological measurements are significantly increased.

Notes: Abstract The processes taking place at the partioning boundaries of a marine ecosystem are still rather obscure. At a permanent research station, water (in winter, ice) samples were taken throughout the year from 6 different depths, and 16 variables related to productivity and hydrochemistry were determined. Transparent and black-walled bell jars were installed on the sea bottom at depths ranging from 0 to 10 m in order to record rates of photosynthesis, respiration and chemical metabolism. In the region studied, two peaks of phytoplankton development occurred: one in winter and one in summer. The winter one coincided with a rise in orthophosphate and nitrate concentrations; the summer peak, with a rise in water temperature and increase of bottom regeneration. Photosynthesis of bottom diatoms was evidenced for all depths investigated. Ammonia and orthophosphate excretion were recorded in all experiments conducted on soft substrata. The measured rates of regeneration corresponded with the values expected in accordance with seasonal changes in nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. Turnover rates of nitrogen and phosphorus between water and sediment were about 2 to 4 months. Higher production of coastal sea regions may be partly explained by the proximity of the photic layer to sediments and by the increased regeneration rates of biogenous elements.

Notes: Conclusions 1. In androgen-sterile rats given 10–250 μ TP in the early postnatal perid, upon sexual maturation there was a decrease in hypothalamic LH-RF, in hypophyseal and blood LH, in ovarian weight and number of corpora lutea, and in blood testosterone and progesterone; there was an increase in the dopamine level of the anterior hypothalamus. 2. Clomiphene administration for 5 days to androgen-sterile rats, particularly to rats given earlier 10 μ TP, Ied to a normalization of these indices and to the onset of ovulation. 3. Short-term clomiphene administration to androgen-sterile rats (5 days), as well as prolonged administration (1 month), restored the capacity for pregnancy.

Notes: Conclusions 1. In male rats the neonatal injection of estradiol exerts a much stronger injurious effect on the mechanisms of sexual function than the injection of testosterone, causing a decline in the synthesis and release of luliberin, LH, and testosterone and a reduced sex-organ mass, resulting in 100% sterility of the animals. 2. The testosterone doses damaging sexual function after neonatal injection are much higher for males (1,000 μg per animal) than for females (15–25 μg). Consequently, the break-down of the regulation of tonic LH release requires the action of a much larger amount of testosterone than for the disruption of the mechanisms of the cyclic secretion of gonadotropins. 3. The action of sex hormones injuring sexual function after injection in newborn male rats is probably localized at the hypothalamic level; there is no loss of hypophyseal sensitivity to luliberin.

Notes: Summary The reorganized stalk of hypophysectomized rats, either “intact” or subjected to a 6-day salt load, has been studied by light and electron microscopy. PAF-positive neurosecretory material is seen mainly in the periphery of the reorganized stalk, usually in 2–5 μ nerve swellings of animals operated two months before. Nerve swellings make contact with a dense capillary network. Three types of nerve fibres and their swellings are distinguished according to the size of elementary granules. Peptidergic A1 and A2 types contain granules with a maximum diameter of 170 and 130 nm respectively; monoaminergic B type fibres have granules of 100 nm in diameter. A1 type axonal swellings are the most numerous and can be tentatively divided into four subtypes according to their ultrastructure and relationships with capillaries and pituicytes. Swellings of types b and c, making direct contact with capillaries or pituicyte perikarya, usually contain few granules and numerous synaptic vesicles arranged frequently in clusters in the “active” zones. It is assumed that they are especially active in the release of peptide neurohormones. It is also hypothesized that in the hypophysectomized rats peptide neurohormones are released not only directly into the pericapillary space but also into the intercellular cleft, especially at sites of neuron-pituicyte junctions. Nerve swellings of type a, separated from the pericapillary space by thin pituicyte processes, usually contain numerous neurosecretory granules. It is suggested that vascular “end-feet” of pituicytes may somehow reduce neurohormone release. The depletion of PAF-positive material as well as the decreased granule content even after a salt load of only 1 per cent shows that the reorganized stalk is functional as a neurohaemal organ, but has a diminished hormone reserve. This, together with a primitive cytomyeloangioarchitecture speaks for morphological and functional imperfection of the reorganized stalk.
