Notes: Abstract A liquid-nitrogen cooled12C16O laser was operated both Q-switched and cw. A total of 276 lasing transitions were observed in cw using an intracavity grating for line selection. In the Q-switch mode, 230 lines occurred without dispersive element in the cavity.

Notes: Abstract In a double-blind, double-dummy randomized controlled clinical trial, the onset and duration of the analgesic effect of dipyrone, 1 or 2 g, and diclofenac sodium, 75 mg, by either the i.m. or the i.v. route were compared in 293 patients (aged 18–70 years) with acute renal colic. A level of ≥ 50 mm on the 100-mm visual analogue scale was required for inclusion in the study. Patients were randomly allocated to six treatment groups, receiving dipyrone 1 g i.m., dipyrone 1 g i.v., dipyrone 2 g i.m., dipyrone 2 g i.v., diclofenac sodium 75 mg i.m.; and diclofenac sodium 75 mg i.v, respectively. Evaluations were performed at 10, 20, 30, and 60 min and 2, 4, and 6 h after treatment (time 0). Primary efficacy end points included course of pain, total pain, percentage of patients with a pain improvement of 50% or more at each evaluation time, pain intensity evaluated by the investigator on a 0–3 scale, and differences in pain intensity. The analgesic response was more marked and prolonged among patients receiving dipyrone 2 g i.m. or dipyrone 2 g i.v. There were no significant differences between dipyrone 1 g and diclofenac sodium 75 mg, by either the i.m. or the i.v. route. All treatment regimens were well tolerated.

Notes: Abstract Objective: To assess the efficacy of metamizol 1 g and 2 g in the relief of pain after surgical extraction of the lower third molar, and to compare the therapeutic effect with that of ibuprofen 600 mg or placebo. Methods: A total of 253 patients aged between 18 years and 60 years who had undergone extraction of the lower third molar (types II–IV) under local anaesthesia, up to a maximum of 108 mg of mepivacaine, were randomly assigned to a single oral dose of a new galenic form (drinkable vials) of metamizol 1 g (n = 75), metamizol 2 g (n = 72), ibuprofen 600 mg (n = 74) or placebo (n = 32). Pain intensity was evaluated by a 100-mm visual analogue scale. To enter the study, a pain level of 50 mm or more was required. The duration of the trial was 1 h. Assessments were carried out at 15, 30 and 60 min after treatment. Results: The analgesic efficacy of metamizol 2 g was significantly better than ibuprofen and placebo with regard to all evaluated parameters. The values of the pain intensity difference at 15 min, the percentage of patients with a decrease of 50% or more on the visual analogue scale at 60 min and the sum of pain intensity differences at 60 min showed metamizol 2 g to be significantly more effective than metamizol 1 g. In general, metamizol 1 g was as effective as ibuprofen 600 mg. The analgesic efficacy of placebo was significantly lower than that of all active treatments. A lower number of patients treated with metamizol 1 g (n = 1) or metamizol 2 g (n = 1) needed rescue medication than those given ibuprofen (n = 7) or placebo (n = 5). No serious adverse effects developed and none of the patients had to leave the study for this reason. Conclusions: The model of the lower third molar, for which the analgesic outcome referred to the first hour after drug administration, demonstrated that the analgesic efficacy of oral metamizol 2 g was significantly higher than that of ibuprofen 600 mg or placebo. Metamizol 1 g and ibuprofen 600 mg showed a similar therapeutic effect. All regimens were as well tolerated as placebo.

Notes: Abstract The pressure broadening of spectral lines based in the Unified Franc–Condon (UCF) treatment, leads to universal line shape function L(z) which is a highly complicated integral of the Airy function and exponentials L(z) = $$\int\limits_0^\infty \xi$$ -2[Ai (-zξ)]2 exp (-ξ-3) dξ. An approximated analytical expression to this function has been found in terms of elementary functions, which is more precise than any previous one, giving also enough accuracy for most of the applications in molecular and plasma spectroscopy. This approximant has been obtained using the recently developed technique of two-point quasifractional approximation. A unique approximant has been found with better accuracy for both sides of the variable. The method used here is an improvement of previous procedures leaving enough free parameters in order to determine exactly the value of the maximum. On the other hand, since there are two different asymptotic forms for large negative and positive values of z, a new way to impose this additional condition has been found.

Notes: Abstract Recently new calculations for the probability field distribution in plasma generating a new expression for the Debye screening fields was carried out by Martin and Perez (1996). This field is a very accurate solution of the Poisson equation for a point test charge in a plasma described by a uniform charge density at Boltzmann thermal equilibrium. The method that we here present is based mainly on the introduction of this adequate field considering the dependence of the potential with the magnitude of the test charge in the calculus of the distribution. First we find the spectral function F(k) carrying out the Fourier transform of the field which is numerically calculated for each representative value of the variable in k space and then fitting these data in order to get F(k). Thus, after the usual numerical integration on the wave number space d3k, the field strength distribution is achieved. This approximation recovers the Holtsmark distribution in the limit of high temperature, and/or, small densities as also these where δ ≠ 0. As in previous works (Ecker, 1972; Spatschek, 1990) the most probable value of the field decreases as the temperature is reduced, and/or, the density increased.
