    Notes: Abstract Angel and co-workers have proposed to detect exoplanets around nearby stars in the infrared (6–17 μm) and to analyze their spectra, searching for H2O, CO2, CH4, NH3, and O3 spectral features. The presence or absence of CO2 would indicate either a strong similarity or difference with Solar telluric planet atmospheres. Water would indicate a habitable planet, and O3 would reveal significant photosynthesis activity, due to the presence of carbon chemistry based life. Like these authors, we suggest an infrared nulling interferometer pointing to the star and working as a coronograph. Our main contribution is to propose an observatory made of four to five 1-meter class telescopes observing from about 4 to 5 AU to avoid the Solar Zodiacal Light (ZL) background at 10μm instead of four 8-meter ones observing from the Earth vicinity. This allows the mission to be feasible in thenear future. The concept, named DARWIN, is under consideration by the European Space Agency for its Horizon 2000 Plus program.

    Notes: Abstract A review of recent theoretical work on gamma-ray bursts is given. The emphasis is put on the localization of sources. It is concluded that sources of gamma-ray bursts must be either old Population I or Population II objects with a mechanism implying that the sources are not too far from the galactic plane. According to this conclusion the more relevant models are probably flare stars or accretion on old neutron stars, radiation of the gravitational energy of the accretion, or thermonuclear explosions.

    Notes: Abstract Proposed to both the French and the European Space Agency as one possible small mission, SPICE is a project for a dedicated small satellite for a near-IR spectroscopic all-sky survey. The instrument would cover the spectral range 1.8 - 3.6µm, possibly extended to 1.8 - 7µm, at a resolution of ≈ 100, with pixels of 1 arc-min. The excellent sensitivity (0.02 MJy sr-1) results from: i) the quasi-zero level of background due to the efficient passive cooling of the whole experiment; ii) the use of large format arrays; iii) the non-stop observing mode (drift-scanning). The spectral domain, complementing the one of ISO, partially opaque from the ground, is specially rich in spectral features tracing stars and all components of the Interstellar Medium (molecular, atomic and ionized gas, dust). With a cooling below 80 K of the focal instrument, then it becomes possible to consider doubling the spectral domain and to cover the whole 1.8 - 7µm range.

    Notes: Abstract Analogies between interstellar and cometary matter can be found in their chemical compositions, both in the gaseous and solid phases, but also in the physical processes involved like evidence for ion-molecules reactions at low temperature and for ice irradiation processes. Such analogies can be observed from 3 types of measurements: interstellar spectra, cometary observations, and analyses of interplanetary dust particles, with the help of laboratory simulation experiments. Taking into account all the present available information, a compilation of the elemental abundances in interstellar matter and in comet Halley is derived, without any assumption about the dust to gas ratio. It is found that there is a significant apparent depletion of nitrogen, presently unexplained, in both interstellar and cometary materials.
