Notes: Background  To compare the effects on quality of life (QOL) of oral methadone with sublingual buprenorphine. Methods  We performed an open-label, non-randomized, two-site (methadone–buprenorphine) study. During 6 months we assessed the quality of life status of 53 opioid-dependent patients admitted to a methadone or buprenorphine maintenance programme using the German version (Berlin Quality of Life Profile) of the Lancashire Quality of Life Profile. Physical symptoms were measured using the Opioid Withdrawal Scale. Five hundred and thirty urine screening tests were carried out randomly to detect additional consumption. Results  Sixty-seven opioid-dependent subjects (38 on methadone and 29 on buprenorphine) were enrolled in the study, and 53 completed it (30 subjects treated with buprenorphine and 23 subjects with racemic methadone). The subjects were comparable on all baseline measures. At the first follow-up (week 8), the buprenorphine-maintained group showed significantly less additional consumption of opioids (P = 0.013) compared with the methadone group. Patients retained in the buprenorphine or methadone programme (week 24) showed no significant differences in all quality of life scores. At the end of the study period, the buprenorphine-maintained group showed significantly less additional consumption of opioids (P = 0.001) and cocaine (P = 0.018) compared with the methadone group. The outcome measures for withdrawal symptoms after 24 weeks of treatment with buprenorphine showed slight advantages in stomach cramps, fatigue or tiredness, feelings of coldness and heart pounding. Conclusions  These results suggest that buprenorphine treatment is as effective as methadone regarding effects on quality of life and withdrawal symptoms. Buprenorphine has the potential to reduce the harm caused by drug abuse. Further research is needed to determine if buprenorphine is more effective than methadone in particular subgroups of patients.

Notes: Summary Crude membrane fractions of Dictyostelium discoideum show the capacity to synthesize (1-3H)dolicholphosphate from (1-3H)dolichol. Formation of dolicholphosphate increased continuously over the first 15 min. The reaction rate was nearly linear with respect to the dolichol content up to 150 µM. The phosphate donor for the reaction is CTP. The optimum concentration of CTP is about 0,75 mM. The reaction is dependent on divalent metal ions, magnesium being more effective than calcium or manganese. The activity of the polyisoprenol kinase depends on the course of the early development. Maximum enzyme activities are present 4–6 h after the induction of the differentiation.

Notes: Summary In the slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum polyisoprenylphosphomannosides are substrates for membrane bound mannosyltransferases; the isolated and purified isoprenyl derivatives transfer mannose to protein in vitro in presence of membrane fractions. The biosynthesis of the mannolipids as well as the biosynthesis of a glucose containing cerebroside, which becomes synthesized in an early stage of the cell development proceeds under control of the cell differentiation. The isolation procedure and the properties of the glycolipids are described, and their functions for the cellular development are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Thin carbonized SiC layers were investigated by Auger depth profiling. If the layers are smooth, ion induced mixing and Auger electron escape depth are the dominant factors that degrade the depth profiles. With the help of the Monte Carlo simulation code T-DYN by Biersack and an escape depth correction program, simulations can describe the measured Auger depth profiles. For quantitative comparison of simulations and measurements the Auger data must be quantified. The sputter time scale must be converted into depth using a known or best fitting sputter rate. The Auger peak-to-peak height must be converted into concentration using sensivity factors which do not include the sputter correction for selective sputtering. Since these sensitivity factors are normaly estimated at a sputtered single crystal, selective sputter correction must be excluded later. A good quantitative agreement was found for a simulated adsorbate/SiC/Si layer system with a measured Auger depth profile of a carbonized SiC layer on Si. This allows a description of the layer structure and of the composition of the layers.

Notes: Abstract Problems of the evaluation of Auger depth profiles of thin SiC layers are caused by a number of effects. These are coverage with an adsorbate layer, preferential sputtering, the change of the peak shapes by chemical bonding states and the broadening of the interfaces by atomic mixing, Auger electron escape depth and original surface, interface and sputtering induced roughness. These effects are investigated and their contribution to the degradation of the depth profile is considered. Atomic mixing simulations including electron escape depth correction are able to reproduce the Auger depth profiles. In special cases the simulation must be convoluted with a resolution function caused by roughness. Thus quantitative conclusions about the layer structure, film composition, impurity distribution etc. are possible.

Notes: Abstract The concentrations and the lattice structure of silicon carbide layers and single crystals are influenced by ion beam sputtering. The influence of ion beam sputtering and primary ion energy on preferential sputtering is investigated by Auger measurements and T-DYN simulations. In dependence on primary ion energy C is enriched. Preferential sputtering increases with decreasing ion energy. Sputtering has a strong influence on the Auger peak shapes of SiC. Except for low ion energy and glancing incidence the peak shapes are independent of the primary ion energy. T-DYN simulations help to explain and understand the near-surface processes during sputtering of SiC. For ion energy dependence of preferential sputtering there is a good agreement of the T-DYN simulation and the Auger measurement.

Notes: Abstract An important step of the factor analysis method is the determination of the number of significant factors. Common techniques as Malinowski indicator function provide perhaps uncertain results in spectroscopic cases depending on signal to noise ratio, the overlap of spectra, sample misalignment and concentration of the factors. ¶A new method for the determination of the number of components in Auger depth profiling is established. The new method of correlation of abstract basic spectra (CABS) takes into consideration the influence of experimental error especially noise. Simulations were carried out, to prove the CABS method. The results are compared with those obtained by established methods. Auger depth profiles of SiC and Si3N4-layers on Si(111) were analyzed by means of the CABS method and Target Factor Analysis. Aspects of data pretreatment as filtering are discussed.

Notes: Summary HPL concentration were measured in maternal serum by means of a radioimmunassay before, during labour and after parturition. Before labour the serum levels of HPL showed no typical or uniform course. However in the beginning of labour there was in 50 percent a peak of the HPL concentration. A different behaviour of the HPL serum concentration could not be stated in women with normal newborns and cases with slight postmaturity. After the birth of the placenta the HPL serum concentration decreased very rapidly. The calculated half time was 24 min. In normal pregnancies there was a statistically significant correlation between the maternal serum concentration and the weight of the placenta.
