    Notes: A sample consisting of 1135 edentulous patients with clinically healthy denture bearing areas, was examined radiologically. It appears that the diagnostic yield is high whereas the expected radiation induced risk is low. Patients should therefore be examined radiologically prior to full denture construction.

    Notes: Using a cast measuring technique, the change in contour of the residual maxillary alveolar ridge of patients who have worn dentures for a number of years and are then fitted with new dentures, has been investigated. The study confirmed that even after 30 years of denture wearing, further bone resorption may occur beneath new dentures.

    Notes: Prepared surfaces of anterior portions of dentate human mandibles were serially ground in steps of 0.2 mm and the anatomical features traced. The information was stored in a computer and then reassembled and plotted in colour. The percentage porosity of the bone, together with the width of the periodontal space was calculated. The cortical plates of the mandible appear to provide the major boney support for the anterior teeth, trabecular bone only being present in scant amounts in the periapical areas. The apparently random arrangement of trabeculae does not support the commonly accepted picture of trabeculae aligned to resist the functional loads transmitted by the periodontal ligament.

    Notes: Radiographs of horizontal serial sections of dentate human mandible disclose a picture of the periodontal space, the bony margin of which is highly irregular. The minimal width of this space was measured at four points roughly 90° apart and the average minimal width obtained.It is suggested that the usual clinical radiographic picture of the periodontal space of a particular tooth or teeth is such that a judgment of the width of the space cannot be made with any certainty.

    Notes: Transverse sections of human periodontal ligament were subjected to tensile loads. Extension-time, load-time, and load-extension curves were obtained. The average value for the ultimate tensile strength of the ligament was found to be 2.4 N/mm2. Loading of the ligament for either extrusion or intrusion did not appear to change its behaviour.
