    Notes: A total of 3226 walleye were removed from Henderson Lake, Ontario over 3 years (1980–2), causing the stock to collapse. This removal tested the applicability of ‘pulse’ fishing as a management alternative, and also provided an opportunity to determine which population characteristics might be monitored to serve as predictors of stock collapse in this species.Following initial exploitation, increased length at age occurred only within younger age-lasses. To use this response as a predictor, one must first obtain pre-exploitation length-at-age data through using the proper gear to sample small fish. Abrosov's mean age to mean age at maturity index may also forewarn of stress (1.2 critical t value for Henderson Lake), but poor recruitment usually invalidates this index, since the lower angling vulnerability of large fish biases mean age calculations. While annual production estimates were a good indicator of the collapse, their determination required much effort. Petersen population estimates produced much more realistic estimates of population size than Schumacher–Eschmeyer estimates, but both estimates not only require much effort but also are influenced by changes in recruitment.Poor predictors of the walleye collapse included: catch-per-unit-effort data, which, while giving some idea of fish density, were not good indices of exploitation stress; condition factors, which were not correlated to fish abundance; fecundity increases, which suffered far too much of a retarded response in Henderson Lake to serve as a predictor of stock collapse. The inability to determine accurately sex ratios of measure recruitment made these parameters unless.At least over the short term, neither northern pike nor white sucker populations have increased following the walleye collapse. As yet, walleye have not returned to their former abundance, so the operational usefulness of ‘pulse’ fishing remains an unknown.

    Notes: Abstract Shifts in †13C of the graminaceous C3 halophyte Puccinellia nuttalliana (Schultes) Hitch. can be induced by salinization. To investigate this phenomenon, three approaches were taken: assay of carboxylases, CO2-enrichment studies, and gas exchange analysis. Although ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase activity decreased with salinity, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase activity did not increase and its levels were not atypical of C3 plants. When plants were grown at four NaCl concentrations under atmospheres of 310 and 1300 cm3 m−3 CO2, the CO2-enrichment enhanced the effects of salinity on †13C. This is consistent with a biophysical explanation for salt-induced shifts in †13C, whereby there is a steepening of the CO2 diffusion gradient into the leaf. Gas exchange analysis indicated that intercellular CO2 concentrations were depressed in the leaves of salt-affected plants. This resulted from a greatly decreased stomatal conductance coupled with only small effects on intrinsic photosynthetic capacity. Water-use efficiency was enhanced.

    Notes: Abstract. Ethylene production during geostimulation was examined in peduncles of dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). Significant amounts of ethylene were evolved from geostimulated peduncles compared with vertical controls only after geostimulation of 2 h or longer and the extra ethylene arose mainly from the lower portion of geostimulated peduncles. Reduction of the ethylene produced from geostimulated peduncles by pretreatment with ethylene-synthesis inhibitors did not affect or enhanced subsequent geobending. It is proposed that ethylene may control the later stages of geobending and influence the straightening process of autotropism.

    Notes: Abstract. Gravistimulation was investigated as a potential and unwanted component in the interpretation of physiological investigations on plants. Using both seedlings and mature sunflower plants, two situations are described where gravistimulation contributes significantly to the outcome of an experiment not initially designed to include this parameter. The number of adventitious roots formed in derooted seedings decreased when the tops of the plants were allowed to bend over under their own weight, and the effect correlated positively with the rate of ethylene production by non-vertical stems. In droughted mature plants, and increase in leaf and stem ethylene caused by water stress was supplemented by additional ethylene produced in the lower halves of stems. Drought had caused these stem tissues to wilt, become gravistimulated, and thus produce more ethylene. Other situations in which gravistimulated ethylene production and its physiological consequences are likely to be complicating factors in experiments are discussed. It is concluded that procedures that unnecessarily place experimental material in non-vertical orientations should be avoided.

    Notes: Using two ecotypes of Stellaria longipes an alpine form with low plasticity and a prairie form with high plasticity, we investigated whether ethylene was involved in the response to wind stress and might be important in controlling plasticity of stem elongation. Stem growth inhibition was positively correlated with concentration of ethephon application and elevation in ambient ethylene in alpine ecotypes, whereas stem growth in prairie plants was stimulated by low ethephon concentrations. When treated with high AVG, the effects were reversed: alpine plant growth was promoted and prairie plant growth was inhibited. Prairie plants exhibited a daily rhythm in ethylene evolution which increased and peaked at 1500 h, and which was absent in alpine plants. Ethylene evolution did not change significantly during the first 2 weeks of growth in alpine plants, whereas ethylene in prairie plants increased significantly during periods of rapid stem elongation. Wind treatment inhibited growth in both ecotypes, but only alpine plants showed a recovery of growth to control levels when wind stressed plants were pretreated with STS. In addition, only alpine plants showed an increase in ethylene evolution in response to wind simulation, whereas prairie plant ethylene evolution did not deviate from rhythms observed in unstressed plants. We concluded that ethylene dwarfs stems in alpine S. longipes in response to wind stress. However, low levels of ethylene may stimulate growth in prairie ecotypes and act independently of wind stress intensity. The contrasting ability to synthesize and respond to ethylene can account for part of the difference in plasticity documented between the two ecotypes.

    Notes: The morphological changes of the shoots of Helianthus annuus cv. Russian caused by varying periods of flooding of the roots were studied. Attention was focused on adventitious root formation and hypocotyl hypertrophy which are known to be caused by excess water around the roots in the absence of anoxia. Twenty-four hours of flooding was found to be sufficient to cause both of these responses. Experiments involving flooding, leaf removal, shoot apical bud removal, two different light intensities, and a treatment in which only a small proportion of the roots were flooded suggested that a major factor causing the flood-induced changes in the hypocotyl arises in the root but other factors may come from the leaves. In the longer-term experiments other flood-induced changes in shoot morphology were leaf epinasty, death of shoot apex, extreme chlorosis and hypertrophy of nodes and internodes. There was no apparent contribution of adventitious roots to the survival of flooded plants.

    Notes: Kharkov 22 M.C. winter wheat was grown continuously from seed under four temperature regimens; 2°C; 2°C then transferred to 20°C; 6°C, and 20°C. Plants were harvested at the 4-leaf stage (except the 2°C plants which were harvested at the 3-leaf stage) and the levels of endogenous gibberellins (GAs) were measured and their cold hardiness determined. The GA content of 20°C and the 6°C seedlings were about equal and greater (by 4- to 30-fold) than the GA content of 2°C seedlings that had been transferred to 20°C (i.e. vernalized). The GA content of the 2°C seedlings was least of all, being 28- to 320-fold less than the 20°C seedlings. At harvest the leaves of the 20°C seedlings were somewhat larger than those of the seedlings grown at 2°C and transferred to 20°C. The leaves of the 6°C seedlings were very much smaller and the leaves of the 2°C seedlings were smallest of all.It is concluded that while GAs may play a role in controlling leaf size and level of cold hardiness of wheat, they are not the most important factor.
