    The Barcelona/Karlstad study - a comparative study of female nursing staff (1998)

    Notes: The aim of this descriptive and exploratory study was to compare the female nursing staff's subjectively experienced health and well-being in two different types of welfare system. This is achieved through demonstrating the possible differences between Swedish and Spanish female nursing staff with regard to living environment, health and satisfaction with general social conditions. For data collection we used a questionnaire answered by 293 nurses and assistant nurses in Spain and 464 in Sweden. The results show significant differences in health. In all aspects Swedish women experience a better health situation. For Spanish women dissatisfaction with their work situation and leisure is strongly significant (p〈0.001) and correlates negatively with their health. For Swedish women dissatisfaction with home and family situation, social intercourse, work situation and leisure (p〈0.001) has a negative influence on their health.

    Notes: Women who are subjected to violence are affected by the traumatic event but also by the resultant negative or positive social situations arising from the manner in which society works. The aim of this study was to investigate, against the background of a traumatic incident, the significance of social events that occur after the act of violence itself. The picture of victimization and how it is experienced is complex. Two case studies illustrate the attempts of assaulted women to gain redress, but they also show how this is made more difficult by secondary traumatization. An analytical model gives some of the factors in the process of victimization. Assaulted women react to the assault on the basis of their current and previous life situation at the same time as the extent of the assault and the relation of the victim to the attacker are of importance. The representatives of society, volunteers and family and friends act in accordance with the “status” the victim has been implicitly given, which affects the woman's autonomy and her own ability to act. Secondary traumatization caused by a negative attitude from various actors in society makes the process of redress and a return to normal life more difficult.

    Notes: Fourteen children with timothy grass pollinosis were given immunotherapy (IT) for 3 years with a purified and characterized timothy grass pollen preparation or a crude aqueous timothy pollen extract. Crossed radioimmunoelectrophoresis (CRIE) showed that 75% of the children under 11 years of age developed new specificities of IgE antibodies against timothy antigens, in contrast to older children, where no development of IgE antibodies against new timothy antigens could be detected. IgE antibodies were only detected against antigens formerly known as allergens. Timothy-specific IgG antibodies increased in most children during hyposensitization against the major allergens Ag 19 and Ag 24/25 and several other IgE-binding timothy antigens.

    Notes: The hydrolysis of birch and timothy pollen allergen preparations by duodenal juice from an adult volunteer was studied in vitro with the aid of rocketimmunoelectrophoresis, radiorocketimmunoelectrophoresis and RAST- inhibition. The results achieved with all methods were similar. The duodenal juice had the capacity to hydrolyse both the grass and tree pollen proteins, and after 30 min preincubation only 10 % of the original birch and timothy allergenic activity remained. Heat treatment of the duodenal juice completely destroyed the proteolytic activity (i.e. no hydrolysis occurred) while protease inhibitors only marginally prevented the hydrolysis.

    Notes: Bee venom obtained by electrical stimulation has been analysed by crossed immunoelectrophoresis against high-titer rabbit antibodies. The antigenic analysis of bee venom revealed that the extract contained 17 antigens, which were detected in die crossed immunoelectrophoresis pattern after staining with Coomassie Brilliant Blue. The crossed immunoelectrophoresis pattern indicated heterogeneity in several of the antigens, as most of the preceipitates (exhibiting enzyme and hemolytic activities) represented multiple forms of phospholipase A, hyaluronidase, acid phosphatase and melittin.
