Notes: Notch stress formulae are derived for the application of a notch stress approach to the fatigue assessment of spot welds. A keyhole notch is assumed to describe the edge of the weld spot between the overlapping plates. The stress fields at the keyhole notch under ‘singular’ and ‘non-singular’ in-plane loading modes inclusive of the stress concentration factors Kt are derived from the relevant Airy stress functions. The formulae are applied to typical loading cases of spot welds and compared with finite element solutions. Fatigue-effective notch stresses inclusive of fatigue notch factors Kf are calculated by applying the microstructural support hypothesis of Neuber. The notch stresses at the keyhole are also derived for out-of-plane shear loading based on the relevant harmonic stress functions. The multiaxial notch stresses at the weld spot edge are thus completely described.

Notes: The paper demonstrates the close correspondence between two local approaches to assess the fatigue strengthof welded joints: Radaj’s approach based on fictitious notch rounding and a recently proposed approach based on thelocal strain energy density (SED) averaged over a given control volume. This volume surrounds the weld root or weldtoe, both modelled as sharp (zero radius) V-notches with different opening angles. The two approaches are applied toload carrying and non-load carrying cruciform joints and the theoretical fatigue notch factors Kf are compared. TheSED averaged over the control volume is determined from finite element models with very fine meshes, as typicallydesigned to evaluate the intensity of the asymptotic stress distributions, and also from coarse meshes, showing asurprisingly good correspondence

Notes: Some recently developed variants of local concepts for assessing the fatigue strength andstructural durability of welded joints are reviewed. These comprise structural stress, notch stress orstrain and fracture mechanics concepts. New variants of the structural stress concept are Dong’sgradient stress approach and Xiao-Yamada’s ‘one millimetre stress’ approach. FE meshing ruleshave been developed for welded joints in thin sheet structures. The concept of fictitious notchrounding is now better substantiated for aluminium alloys. The small-size notch concept isapplicable to thin sheet lap joints. The new notch stress intensity factor concept is based on thesingular stresses at the sharp weld toe notch. Advanced fracture mechanics concepts combine crackinitiation at the seam weld root or nugget edge and crack propagation over the plate thicknessresulting in endurable FK values as function of cycles per unit thickness, N/t

Notes: Summary The complete equations describing simple relations between forces and stresses at the weld spot of overlap joints are presented, and applied to specimens used in industry as an example. The equations are also modified in respect to a measuring method for determining the weld spot forces. The essential components of the theoretical description are: an orthogonal reference system at the weld spot positioned according to the principal loading direction, the decomposition of the weld spot forces into joint face forces and «eigenforces», the weld spot modelled as a rigid core for evaluating the stresses connected with the joint face forces, and a homogeneous distribution of the stresses resulting from the «eigenforces». The assumptions and possible complications of the method under engineering aspects and the details of the rigid core model are described in separate publications.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The stiffness matrices of thin-walled bars are determined and transformed to excentric nodal points starting from the simplified theory. The shear strain of the middle plane of the bar is approximately included. The warping elasticity of the stiffener is considered including free warping and completely suppressed warping.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In order to describe the loading condition at weld spots, the well known forces in the jointing face are complemented by the eigenforces in the centre plane of the plate. The structural stresses at the weld spot edge, which are approximated by a straight line or cosinus distribution, are derived from the jointing face forces and eigenforces and vice versa on the basis of equilibrium conditions. As an example, the situation for the tensile shear and cross tension specimen is considered.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The influence of the geometrical parameters on the stress concentration is determined with finite element methods for the disc under tension with an elastic rectangular or rhombic core. The calculated stress concentration factors are compared with the function analysis stress concentration factors in the limiting cases “cut-out” and “rigid core”. The core stiffness is essential for the value of the notch stresses, the distribution of which is given by the shape of the core and the loading of the disc.

Notes: This paper compares the results obtained by the finite element method with ‘exact’ solutions to a given set of problems. These are the stresses on the boundary of a hole in an infinite plate, the plate being subjected to three different types of loading. Two types of element are used for these plane stress problems, triangular elements with constant strains and tri- angular elements with linearly varying strains. The problems are solved for two different meshes and the results shown are stresses along a radial section and the values derived for stress concentrations against the number of unknowns in each mesh.
