Notes: Abstract Elastic scattering of20Ne on24Mg was studied at an incident20Ne energy of 40 MeV. Scattered20Ne and24Mg nuclei were observed in coincidence with a standard surface barrier and a position sensitive detector. The measured angular distribution shows periodic oscillations which are identified with the24Mg(20Ne,24Mg)20Ne reaction. Taking interference between elastic scattering and transfer into account, anα-spectroscopic factor ofS=0.08±0.02 was deduced from the amplitude of the oscillations.

Notes: Abstract The breakup of24Mg into16O and8Be fragments has been studied using the reactions12C(24Mg,16O8Be)12C and12C(20Ne,16O8Be)8Be. In the latter case, discrete states are observed near 24–28 MeV of excitation in24Mg and the yield from this reaction is an order of magnitude greater than that of the former. This implies the excited configuration populated in24Mg is favoured by the transfer of an alpha-particle and would therefore suggest an association with a 4-particle 4-hole configuration. This suggests a link with the octupole stabilised deformed minimum which appears in Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations of the potential energy surface in24Mg, and also with theα —16O —α structure predicted in cranked cluster model calculations. In the excitation spectrum no states appear above 31 MeV indicating a possible band termination in disagreement with recent results using the16O+12C reaction. These results are discussed in terms of the Harvey model.

Notes: Abstract We review the experimental evidence for alpha chain states in 4N-nuclei. Bloch-Brink cranked cluster model calculations suggest that such states should exist in all light A=4N nuclei. Recently a strong resonance has been observed in the12C(12C,12C(O 2 + ))12C(O 2 + ) reaction at 33 MeV which has been taken as evidence of a 6-α chain state in24Mg. The angular distributions show strong peaks at 90° due to the simultaneous excitation of several nearly degenerate resonances with a range of L-values. We review our analysis of these data and present the results of calculations for the widths of resonances in hyperdeformed nuclei. We demonstrate that such resonances may have relatively narrow widths despite their high excitation energies. We surmise that the 33 MeV resonance in12C+12C scattering has a chain state structure.
